COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The most delightful way to enjoy Saku Porter would be in front of a fireplace or in candle light during those long and dark winter nights. This beer keeps you warm all through the coldest time of the year. Saku Porter is the ideal accompaniment to roasted meats and game. The fact that porter is also perfectly suited to light various desserts, especially those containing chocolate, may not be that commonly known. The ideal serving temperature for Saku Porter is rather high, 12–14 °C, a typical quality for dark beers. Saku Porter, a unique dark beer with strong taste, is brewed of water, caramel, light and coffee malts, hop and yeast, however, only once a year – for Christmas. Similarly to classical porters, Saku Porter is a strong (alc. 7.5 % of volume) full-bodied beer. A special jewel to Saku Porter is its high, rich, brownish foam.

Note: Originally brewed in Saku at 7.5%, moved to Aldaris and reduced to 7% in winter 2009/2010.

Bottle: Once poured, there was a nice golf ball sized perfectly clear bubble at the top of the bottle. I watched it swirl around in amazement for at least a full minute before it popped; I’ve never seen that ever in a beer. Good or bad, it was kinda cool. Anyways; it pours a dark brownish red color with a nice dark brown head. The nose is ripe with licorice and coffee notes, dense dark chocolate and a sweet fig and marmalade note. The flavor is balanced with the alcohol and roasted notes and the backing of sweet sticky dark malts and fruit. Finishes creamy and chewy with chocolate, raisin and carob. Not bad!

Pour is a black with a small tan head. Aroma is some dark rasted malt and chocolate. Flavor is at first dark roasted malts with a stong raison and dark fruit. This could almost be considered a dopplebock. Decent but different tasting porter.

Bottle (7.5%). Pours with a very deep, practically black hued body and a tan head that lasts. Good lace. Aromas are sweet and pretty alcoholic. A bit of cloying sweetness. Estery: plums, banana. Malt profile is strong of caramel and molasses. Dark roast is relatively absent. Flavors of alcohol and esters, raisins, plum, banana, dark cherries, and dark fruit. Some molasses. Dark roast flavors are very light (a bit of chocolate). Balance is malt sweetness, medium duration with a bit of a lingering plastic flavor. Some bitterness. Nicely creamy, and warming, body is full with a bit too much residual sweetness for my tastes. Medium to light bubbles.

Bottle. Black pour, aroma is doppelbock nutty. Sweet first sip, with sweet cherries and bitter dark chocolate. Finish is bitter cocoa. Reminds me of a Bell’s Cherry Stout. More complex than I expected. Enjoyable.

500ml bottle. Deep brown black with a respectable beige head. Brutal burnt raisin and brown sugar aroma. I never remember Saku being the bomb or anything, but it’s really quite bad now. Extract tasting, thick molasses brown sugar tones. Cheap nonsense beer, the kind that wouldn’t surprise you if it was brewed in radioactive steel kettles. Maybe it’s old, maybe it is just bad.

A decent Baltic porter, but I prefer the Polish versions. It has some rich chocolate flavors and dark fruits.

Bottle 50 cl. Black with a nice light brown head. A sweet malty aroma with a small chocolate sence. The taste is sweet malty, cocolate with some dark fruits sence, full body, nice beginning and ending for this beer.
