The most delightful way to enjoy Saku Porter would be in front of a fireplace or in candle light during those long and dark winter nights. This beer keeps you warm all through the coldest time of the year. Saku Porter is the ideal accompaniment to roasted meats and game. The fact that porter is also perfectly suited to light various desserts, especially those containing chocolate, may not be that commonly known. The ideal serving temperature for Saku Porter is rather high, 12–14 °C, a typical quality for dark beers. Saku Porter, a unique dark beer with strong taste, is brewed of water, caramel, light and coffee malts, hop and yeast, however, only once a year – for Christmas. Similarly to classical porters, Saku Porter is a strong (alc. 7.5 % of volume) full-bodied beer. A special jewel to Saku Porter is its high, rich, brownish foam.

Note: Originally brewed in Saku at 7.5%, moved to Aldaris and reduced to 7% in winter 2009/2010.

500ml bottle. Pours a nice dark brown with a thick tan head that lingers. Light aroma of roasted malt sweetness. Taste has a nice roasted malt caramel and toffee flavor with a subtle coffee background that shows more as it warms. Mouthfeel has good carbonation with a medium body.

Bottle on Rugby Corroi night @20MR thanks to SP, 06/03/13. Very dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head. Nose is roast malt, light coffee tones, dark fruits, toffee. Taste comprises dark malt, hint of chocolate, dark treacle toffee, molasses, tar, leather, slightly burnt aspects. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation lending towards a dry finish. Pretty basic average fayre with zero hidden depths for a 6.9% Baltic Porter !

Bottle from ABC Beers, Den Haag. Poured a hazy dark brown colour with a thin broken tan head. The aroma is of liqourice and malt, leading to a stong bitter flavour with lots of alcohol inspired liqourice and dark chocolate. It’s a rather nice porter, but the alcohol is starting to take over a little which does not improve the flavour.

A dark copper color with a fluufy tan head. Head retention good with lace. A brown porter by style. Aroma of chocolate malt and some malt sweetness. Flavor very light with some other sugar flavors which distract form the malt. A basic brown ale.

Medium brownish-amber color with a slight, off-white head. Light, brown-sugary, caramel malt aroma. Spicy, bready flavor, with a decent amount of caramelized, malty sugar and a hint of licorice and alcoholic warmth. Medium bodied and a very carbonated palate. This is more like a dark strong lager in profile.

Poured clear reddish-brown - lighter than I expected for a porter. The head was thick and tan, slowly diminishing, leaving almost no lace. Aroma was sweet - caramel, butterscotch, hints of cherries. Flavor starts sweet, with caramel being the main flavor, finishes with a slight roasted malt flavor that lasts for a bit. Body is medium, slightly tingly carbonation on the tongue, and the slightest bit of alchohol in the end.

Bottled. Dark brown colour. Small, very quickly diminishing head. Caramelly, strongly coffeish aroma. Toasted malts and heavy coffee flavour. Lasting medicine-bitter finish. Mediumbodied. Interesting beer, but the medicine bitterness somehow spoiled it for me.

I have a soft spot for Baltic Porters, and while this isn’t really a sophisticated beer, it’s got a good nose and flavour that reminds me of bread pudding. Not bad.
