COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The most delightful way to enjoy Saku Porter would be in front of a fireplace or in candle light during those long and dark winter nights. This beer keeps you warm all through the coldest time of the year. Saku Porter is the ideal accompaniment to roasted meats and game. The fact that porter is also perfectly suited to light various desserts, especially those containing chocolate, may not be that commonly known. The ideal serving temperature for Saku Porter is rather high, 12–14 °C, a typical quality for dark beers. Saku Porter, a unique dark beer with strong taste, is brewed of water, caramel, light and coffee malts, hop and yeast, however, only once a year – for Christmas. Similarly to classical porters, Saku Porter is a strong (alc. 7.5 % of volume) full-bodied beer. A special jewel to Saku Porter is its high, rich, brownish foam.

Note: Originally brewed in Saku at 7.5%, moved to Aldaris and reduced to 7% in winter 2009/2010.

Saku Estonian Porter is a Baltic Porter by style. Baltic porters are direct descendants of Russian Imperial Stout, a beer style that was brewed by British brewers, and shipped to Russia and the Baltics. Some Baltic breweries, that were lager brewers, decided to do their own versions of Imperial Stout, yet did so with their lager yeast strains, which are bottom fermenting. This bottom fermenting lager version of Imperial Stout became know in the beer world as Baltic porter. Baltic porter is very similar to Imperial stout, but is less fruity, and is rounder and smoother in body. Like all beer styles, there is range within the style, and Saku Estonian Porter falls into the lower end of the scale, being less potent, and lighter in color than the majority of Baltic porters. Saku Estonian Porter pours to a some what murky, deep caramel color, with a thick tan head, and a soft to moderate amount of carbonation. The nose on this beer is very malt accented, with lots of sweet malty, toasty, and nutty aroma. The palate is firm with lots of sweet and caramel malt flavors on the tongue, and nice touches of toasty malt flavors. This beer finishes with more sweet and caramel malty flavors up front, and ends with a cloying malty finish. This is a delicious, well done, very malt accented brew, that really is a unique version of Baltic porter, quite different from most versions you will find. This beer made a perfect match with an appetizer of pierogies(potato pasta dumplings filled with cheddar cheese and mashed potato) in an onion and butter sauce, with sour cream.

Medium light brown head. Opaque black body. Dry burnt chocolate aroma with notes of wild berries and metal. Very harmonic. Taste is deep, sweet chocolate and licorice, very well balanced with wild berry notes. Smooth, dryish mouthfeel. Dry, roasty coffee and chocolate aftertaste. An excellent porter! (0.5l bottle.)

Courtesy of oh6gdx. Thanks, Pat. Highly concentrated chocolate, raisin, malt aroma. Hints at brown sugar and fruit cake without totally being evidently comprised of those aromas. The body is dark ruby brown to black and holds a compressed tan head that is fairly bubbly. Fairly hot alcohol in the fore followed by some metallic/tin notes then burnt/roasted sweet malts that taste a bit like if you pan fried sweet raisin bread. Raisins, licorice and caramel notes linger. Decent though comes off a bit hot.

Pours purplish-black with a thick, dark tan head....large frothy bubbles. Scent is malt, slightly roasty....a little wood. Taste is cocoa powder, very sweet, creamy. It’s a dessert. Very, very, tasty.

Poured two and half fingers on a pitch black body. The head was quickly gone though. The aroma is faint: roasted and black malt. The taste is darkness with a sweet touch. Burnt and roasted malt with a sweet finish. The texture is smooth with low carbonation. It’s lacking in the smell area but the taste is nice.

Bottle 0,50L. Dark brown mahagony colour with small, light brown creamy head that sits down quickly, but doesn’t dissapear. Light malty aroma of caramel, chocolate and roasted malt. Light sweet, cacao taste with moderate bitter aftertaste with mild mouthfeel. Medium to full body, oily texture and light carbonation. Nicely balanced and lighter than Saku Puhade Porter. Very mild and drinkable.
