From cask at Bishops Arms. Pours hazy dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is toasted caramelish and sweet. Mild fruity, yeasty and liqourice. Light caramelish. Dominant liqourice and roasted malt. Light bitter and dark malty. Bitter and liqourice finish.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20 AleTsar (1331) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - NOV 16, 2011
Bottle from Beers of Europe
Very dark brown, ruby light through glass, thin creamy tan head, reasonable lacing
Aroma - fairly light nose of dark malts, roasted malts, liqourice, hint of plain chocolate
Taste - Rich malts (there are 12 of them!), roasted malts all smoothly blended, liquorice, molasses, some bitter chocolate, light coffee. Roasted malts are light, probably as it’s a porter. Not complex. Flavour perhaps a little understated - but does build up as you drink more
Palate - medium carb, thin to medium body, rather over-carbonated (needs a good stir), underlying smooth and silky texture. Finish is smooth with light coffee and chocolate.
Overall - Quite a nice porter, but over-carbonated, needs a bit more body and flavour. Considering the large number of different malts used (12 or 14), the flavour was not as complex as expected.

50 cl bottle. Pours brown (big head) the beer is almost black when settled.
Smells of dark malt and a hint of coffee. Taste is quite light in the start, but then becomes heavier. A pretty sweet flavour in this beer. VERY NICE!

A gift from SJ. A thin porter that is slighlty watery with notes of caramel malts, roasted malts and coffee. The finish was a tad peppery and choxolate. It was ok.

Bottled. A black beer with a small off-white head. A nice roasty aroma with some fruitiness. Burnt malts in the mouth with more fruity flavours. A bit of veg also. A short finish. A reasonable porter but not deep enough.

50 cl bottle. $2.50 at Binny’s,maybe because the "Best Before" is "F11." Pour is brown, then settles to nearly black in the glass with a slightly tan head. Smell is plentiful dark malt surrounded by molasses and coffee roast. Taste is light as first, then opens the gates for a complex medley of molasses, coffee, nut brown, and some other ale grains. A mix like this comes in pretty sweet, but there are earthy English hops to keep it in check. Slight sherry backing, too. FWIW, this adds Shropshire to my list of English counties sampled. Up to 17 so far.
