Style: A wheat beer very much in the modern English style – served bright and top fermented. The recipe uses a small amount of fresh lemon to compliment the citrussy flavours produced by the wheat malt. Each of the Hops used, Goldings, Saaz and Cascade add fresh lemony flavours to the brew.
History: Originally Salopian was renowned (notorious?) for producing some fairly outlandish beer, usually brewed with wheat and fruit flavoured. Most of these were surprisingly well received, but mainly in speciality outlets or in bottles. Lemon Dream was devised to be far more subtle – basically a slightly lagery, lightly bittered beer with a hint of lemon. We felt that this would appeal to a broader market and this has definitely been the case, with many ‘traditional’ Pubs running the beer as a regular through the spring and summer. It has found favour at competitions too, winning an award at CAMRA West Midlands 4 years on the bounce as well as at SIBA West Midlands too.

Clear yellow, sweet lemon in the scent and taste. Some light hop too. A touch cooler and it’d be a perfect summer beer.

Handpull cask at the Five Lamps, Derby. Golden, clear with a small film of white head. Doesn’t put me off but doesn’t exactly scream ’drink me’ either. Soft and barely tangible lemon aroma. Clean and not soapy like so many lemon ales. Taste is sweet, more like lemon merengue than lemon peel, with a gentle hoppiness in the finish. Well executed and while it lacks the flamboyance of Salopian’s best work, it is a solid little ale.

Cask at Posada, Wolverhampton. As ’Salopian Lemon Dream’. Dark yellow, clear, still, small creamy dense white head, full lacing. Aroma is airy, malty, plain bread. Body is medium, smooth, soft carbonation. Taste is pork with apple sauce up front, pretty bready, not much lemon showing up, musty wheat, a little tart. Drinkable, just quite bready and basic.

Cask at The Cobblers, Leek. A clear straw colour with a thin white head. Aroma of lemon, a little orange, subtle grain, grass and spicy hops. Taste of zesty lemon, slight wheat, subtle nutty malt, grass and spicy hops. Light bodied and an oily texture. A dry, zesty lemon, spicy hop bitterness in the finish. Exactly what it says on the pumpclip, a nice, zesty, lemon wheat ale with a fresh, hop bitterness. Good.
