The colour of an eclipse, the aroma is of char, chocolate & roasted malts and then the flavour of pine & citrus ascends over the palate, bringing the full bodied finish to a dizzying height.

Opaque dark black - brown beer. Big fluffy pale tan head. Palate is slightly crisp and semi dry. Smooth and light dark malt. Light malt cream. Mild minerals and a mild floral citrus hops. Dry finish. Okay - needs a bit of backbone.

Bottle at home in London - many thanks to BlackHaddock for the trade! Pours clear, deep red-brown with a large, billowing tan froth head. Nose has earth, hints of tangy citrus, roasted malts, burnt pine. Light to medium sweet flavor with burnt grass and pine, some tangy grapefruit, a bit of bittersweet baking cocoa, hints of the alcohol, well toasted bread. Medium bodied with lively, explodes-in-your-mouth carbonation. Light warmth to finish, further tangy citrus, dark bread, some lime, roasted malts, dirty pine, bitter earth. Decent effort.

Bottle at home, Beermerchants.com, 04/08/13. Light black with a mahoosive frothy light tan head. Nose is soapy, liqourice, berry fruits, hop notes. Taste comprises light roast, pine notes, hops, light cocoa, light blackcurrant tones. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry finish with hop bitterness and mineral notes. Solid enough CDA - good work Salopian!

Cask conditioned at The Town Wall Tavern, Coventry. Very dark chesnut with white head. Lots of dry bitterness from richly roasted dark chocolate malts but remaining crisp rather than giving over a chocolate flavour. There is fruity alcohol, but not over bearing then a grapefruity, citrusy, hoppy bitterness. An absolute belter for me, loved it, even if it did make me late for my pick up.

Bottle from The Wine Cellar. It pours cloudy black with a medium light tan head. The nose tangerine, peach, floral, Parma violets, sherbet, roasted malt and toast. The taste is bitter, roasty, earth, toast, cocoa, citrus peel, cocoa, charred wood, dark fruits and pepper with light alcohol warmth and a dry, roasty finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Good, rich body. Nice hoppy stout action from Salopian.

UPDATED: AUG 18, 2013 1) Cask gravity, The Crown, Nuneaton, 15/12/12. Headless mahogany with ruby edges. Liquorice, cheap coffee granules, strawberry jelly aroma. Roasted and fruity leaning towards the BIPA ball park; hints of strawberry and raspberry fromage frais behind the roast. Decent but far from dizzying. 737314=3.4. 2) So much better in the bottle and chilled. Aroma of raspberry/strawberry jelly cubes, soapy liquorice, filter coffee and earthy roast. Lip-smacking combo of ripe juicy berry, liquorice and roasted notes suggesting mocha, black black chocolate and burnt pistachio. Lovely.

On gravity at the winter beer festival, the Three Tuns, Bristol 23/2/2013. Dark brown with next to no head. Milk chocolate, a touch of coffe, some citrus fruits and hoppy, dryish finish. Good, but not the best black IPA.
