Disappointing stout which is understated from its tasting notes description.

Cask Handpump at the Penny Black JDW, Northwich 01/04/2011
Some roast aroma. Beige head. Black a little rich and smooth on the palate. Hoppy and fruity with a hint of bitterness in a dry liquorice flavoured finish.

Cask conditioned handpump Eastgate Northampton. A black beer with a thick off-white head and lacing. A fairly thin, partly sweet aroma. Decent in the mouth with light roast and a touch of bitterness. Liquorice, chocolate and a bit of veg. It’s OK.

Cask-conditioned at the Knights Templar (JDW), Bristol 16/04/2011. Near black with a thin, tan head. Aroma of big roasted malts with a touch of chocolate. Full mouth feel, with the flavour dominated by charcoal, with a touch of some chocolate and liquorice before a dryish finish. Very enjoyable.

Cask at Baker Street Wetherspoons, London. Black coloured pour with a medium beige head. Roasty, liquorice aroma. Tastes roasty, malty, slight liquorice but not much, slight coffee. Smooth and easy to drink, a nice stout.

Cask, Last Plantagenet, Leicester. Black with a beige foam. Aromas are dark chocolate with rich coffee and some smoky, meaty notes. Soy sauce with burnt, woody aspects. Flavours are dry and woody with peat and sweet chocolate and blackberry. Salty soy notes with a dry roast finish. Pretty good.

Hand pulled at the Briar Rose, Birmingham. Full, balanced, sweet, dry. Ashy. Really nice actually. Couldn’t taste much liqorice, but that’s a blessing as I hate the stuff. Mad eh?

The Baron. Pretty much pitch with a dirty, lowdown tan collar. Beef crisps, chocolate malt and roasted aubergine aroma. Flavour is impressive; burnt but oozingly lactic with melted Cadbury’s, zero liquorice, burnt wood and a delicate, retronasal smoked meat and onion sauce note like a rauch. There is a tang of hop but pretty much completely buried by mellow roastedness- good. Thick, dusty and lingering. Right up there with the Cairngorm Roggen and Butcombe for me.

Cask, JDW, Carlisle. One of the best beers of the recent JDW fest, no surprise, coming from Saltaire, mind. Fine black beer, with a good roast aroma. Very fresh and clean on the palate, didn’t get too much of the liquorice, but there was the faintest hint in there. Loved the hoppy bitter finish, veered it ever so slightly towards black IPA!
