Bottle. Dark brown body with a medium beige head. Aroma has lots of cocoa powder and dark chocolate. Taste has a nice balance of roastiness, sourish hop bite and cocoa sweetness. Doesnít get cloying like many chocolate beers tend to, so itís decent. This must be the first bottle with a QR code on it that Iíve seen.

Bottle. Black body with a thin beige head. Good lacing. Aroma of ash, chocolate, cocoa powder and burnt toast. Flavour of chocolate, herbs, plum and Coco Pops. Thin to medium body with a smooth mouthfeel. Light fizz. Lives up to the name. Iíd like to try this on cask.

Cask at The Green Dragon, Leek (JDW) A deep brown colour with a foamy beige head. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, a little vanilla and subtle dark fruits. Taste of chocolate, caramel, some roasted malts, a little vanilla and subtle dark fruits. Medium bodied and soft carbonation. A sweet, slightly roasted, chocolatey finish. Very chocolatey and can taste genuine chocolate ingredients but for me, itís far too sweet and with only a subtle roasted bitterness in it. Ok.

On cask up the White Lady. Appearance - deep brown to black. Fawn head. Nose - a bit of toffee and chocolate coming through. Some ginger bread. Taste - sweet chocolate and toffee. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a finish that could be zippier! Overall - deep flavoured but could be fresher on the finish.

Cask up the white lady. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Strong chocolate aromas. Sweet mocha taste. Slightly artificial chocolate aftertaste, light bitter finish.

Cask at the Regal (JDW), Cambridge. Dark brown, very dark. Cloudy tan head. Luscious chocolate aroma. Taste is sweet and malty but thereís a bitter almost sour backbone. Thin body and oddly astringent aftertaste. Surprising but I donít care for this.

Cask. Pours mahogany dark with tan cream top. Aroma decidedly chocolate and more Cadburys than Lindt. Taste sweet chocolate malt with mild coffee notes and fruity tang. The best stout on the Nottingham stroll this year and in Wetherspoons.

UPDATED: MAR 16, 2016 Lovely chocolate aroma and taste with coffee tones. Good strength and despite sweetness surprising bite on palate. Can see why got gold in 2014.

Cask at the Monkís Retreat, Reading. Mahogany-black with a thick beige head. Lightly effervescent. The chocolate is very obvious; thereís a hint of fake chocolate but it just about manages to stay tasting genuine- maybe veering towards a chocolate liqueur in taste. A good amount of roastiness balances out the sweetness. Some coffee granules too and maybe just a touch of marmalade in the aftertaste. A well balanced, tasty beer; just needs to lose that hint of fake chocolate to make it really good.
