On tap. Dark brown color with mild white head. Sugary aroma, mostly of molasses and waffles. Flavor is heavy on both of those as well, with the molasses prominent, raisin bread as well. Minimal hop presence, and I detected hints of detergent as well. After several tastings this is defintely unique, though too sweet overall.

Draft. Pours brown with thin head that dissipates. Sort of a sour malty beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2012 Had on draft at the Old Ye Oyster House on the Freedom trail.... Delicious beer, nice caramel malt flavor, definitely a nice unique beer...

My first traditional ale....aroma is mildly sweet with some nutty malt presence and spice. Flavor is mainly malt, with caramel and toffee on the front...finishes with a lingering roasted malt character. Wasn’t that great, but nothing to complain about.

This is still pouring at the Union Oyster House in Boston. Pours a deep brown into a shaker. Nice, off-white head with medium retention. No aromas. Flavor leans to malt, but was served way too cold to get an idea of the full flavor. Refreshing non-the-less.

Loved ths ale. A true old colonial ale that brings you back in time with every sip. I hope for two things to come out of retirement...this ale and #33 Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics! I’m not holding my breath!

Tap @ Porter’s, Boston. Pours a brown-ish amber color. The aroma is slightly sweet and nutty, possibly with some fruit thrown in. The taste is very smooth with a nice sweetness to it and subtle spices and malts thrown in. I’m a big fan of this beer.

On draught. Pours amber with a white head. Smells nutty with hints of juniper. Tastes roasted and nutty with splashes of spice. Not a bad experiment.

bottled. thanks to linc for pinching this one. decent ruby appearance. not hard to notice the molasses in the aroma of this one along with some surgical dressing. surprisingly dry although with no other real hop character. rough tasting with traces of nutmeg and prune juice, pretty dull texture, not sure who this beer is trying to appeal to

NEBF05: Clear orange and brown with a thin white head, rich spicy aroma with a hint of rye and brown sugar. Starts and ends lightly sweet. An odd tasting beer, but certainly interesting.

This beer pours with a small white lace, it has a great light amber color that has a richness to it. It makes you want to drink it right away. The smell is of nuts and raw sugar cane....the taste is a little bitter it has really strong molasses flavors and roasted nuts are in the fore front of this ale. I liked it overall but def an acquired taste which is what they were going for, something authentic to the time.
