Samuel Adams Alpine Spring is yet another addition to the brewery’s Small Batch series. For this entry, Sammy & Co used the more traditional labeling. Starting in late October, you’ll see the first of the Small Batch hit the market – Tasman Red, Third Voyage, Griffin’s Bow, The Vixen. (Vixen just won GABF gold.) This unfiltered lager is perfect for spring. Noble Tettnang hops, grown in the foothills of the Alps, give the brew a bright citrus and floral aroma flavor. These are balanced by the slightly sweet crisp notes of two-row pale and honey malts. Cheers! Note - LCBO beer called Samuel Adams Spring Lager is the same product as this

Reviewed 2/15/13. 12 oz bottle into a nonic pint glass. A: Pours an ultra hazy golden amber color. The head is a one finger white shade with decent retention. The lacing down the glass is fairly nice, as well. S: The hops have a very earthy yet noble (rather than grassy) tone to them. Beneath the semi-prevalent hops are some bready, biscuity malts and strong lemon esters. T: Like I anticipated, it’s a very earthy-flavored brew. The initial lemon note gives the beer a good start, and counteracts the finishing biscuity malts and earthy hops. I’d reckon the finish is a bit too sweet for my tastes - one that gives off a note dangerously reminiscent of corn at times - but this is a pleasant drink otherwise. Still, it’s not nearly as complex as the unfiltered appearance might suggest. M: It’s actually a bit heavy on the palate, more than I’d like it to be. On the plus side, the astringent quality on the finish helps to neutralize some (but not all) of the sweetness, and helps inspire good drinkability. O: When I had this last year, I thought it was completely awful. Now, I find it perfectly average - not bad, not great, workable in a pinch, but not worth seeking out. If anything represents the C average to a T, it’s this (and Fat Tire).

Pours from 12 oz bottle a slightly cloudy golden/amber color with a big white head. Aroma is of malts, hops, citrus, moss, slight pine, and some floral notes. The flavours are definitely on the sweet side, with honey, lemon and light-flavored malts, with some dry and semi-spicy hops show through a little bit in the finish and in the aftertaste. Decent, go to lager I guess.

[Bottle] Pours a hazy golden color with a rocky white head. Nose is of floral hops, perfume and crisp lemongrass. Flavors follow the aroma closely. Toasted grain, lemon zest, straw and light yeasty notes in the taste as well. Crisp and hoppy finish. Good stuff. Tasting notes from early 2012.

Transfer from BA rated on 1-18-12 - Poured from bottle in pint glass. Appearance - Pours a darker golden color with a slight haze. The large head that forms is quite persistent and lasts a good few minutes before fading to a thin white foam, leaving very nice lacing. Smell - Its a balance of a bit of maltiness (a very light biscuit) with a higher and more potent aroma of citrus (mostly lemon) and some more floral hop aromas. The smell profile seems to enter and leave as one. All being persistent throughout to some degree. Taste - Some sweet malty flavor mixed with a good deal of citrus. The hop then enters the area and gives a little floral taste to the brew. Very smooth transitions and tastes. Mouthfeel - A relatively average thickness and a moderate level of carbonation. Its maybe only a very slight bit over the normal brew. Nothing too significant. Overall - A refreshing beer with a bit higher alcohol content and more flavor savory smells and tastes then the typical refreshing beer (say the typical american lager). I think I would very much enjoy this come spring; after a nice meal, while sitting outside at a picnic table.

Rated on 01-20-2012. This bottled beer has a small semi-fizzy white head with a lengthy retention, hazy pale yellow body, very fizzy, fast rising carbonation, and spotty lacing. The aroma is malty, crisp, grassy, floral hops, and citrus. The flavor is malt, fruity, citrus, and grassy hops. This beer has a dry finish. The mouthfeel is light carbonation and this beer is light bodied. Overall, the aroma is better than the flavor as the flavor is too lackluster.

Smell of fruits and herbs. Cloudy amber colour, creamy white head. Aroma of lemon, yeast, coriander. Bitter and faintly sour. Very much witbier to it.
