4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled on 9/10/2010. This fruit beer pours a medium reddish color from a corked and caged 750ml bottle. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet, cherry and woody. A medium bodied fruit beer. The malts are fruity and sweet, slightly tart cherry flavors. Hints of wood and oak mellow the sweet fruit flavors. The hops are herbal and floral. A mellow, smooth tasting beer. Nice carbonation. None of the flavors dominate or stand out. There is a touch of tartness from the cherries and a touch of tannins/oak from the barrel. Interesting beer, it is in no way a kriek, and I kind of wish that Boston Beer Company would not use the kreik and lambic names for beers that are aren’t funky or sour, but I digress. This beer is really working for me as a fruit beer. Was kind of surprised to find a bottle of the barrel-aged series here in Colorado. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet and oaky.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 ml bottle brought back to St. Louis by a buddy of mine who works for Sam Adams. Pours a cloudy orange-red color and a small, creamy off-white head. Aroma of sweet cherries, sweet caramel malts, faint oak, sugar, and toast. Flavor is also dominated by cherry and malt sweetness, with the oak notes taking more of a back seat. Medium-bodied, with a sweet, malty mouthfeel and modest carbonation. Pretty cool but I would have liked a little more tartness or funk to the cherries instead of just sweetness.

750 ml bottle @ WPBF 2013.
Pours a dark copper pink colour with a white head. Aroma of caramel, cherries and some grass. Flavour of caramel malts, grass, cherries, cardboard and some bitterness. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel and a slick, cherryish finish. Tastes a bit old. Not at it’s best anymore.

Bottle sample at a tasting. Thanks Oren. Clear red with an off-white head. Aroma of cherries, malt, caramel, some alcohol, wood notes and light brandy hints. Sweet fruity flavor with cherries, caramel, a bit of sweet spiciness, some liqueur notes and a slightly drier finish. Medium-bodied. So-so.

3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle shared with Andrew, Brendan and Dubra. Pours a deep hazy amber mahogany body with thin off white lacing. Aroma is sweet cherries, cherry pie, sour dark fruit, prune, raisins and light oak. Mouthfeel is a bit thinner than preferred, with notes of prunes, watery balsamic vinegar, light cherries. The flavor just wasn’t there for me.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
I bought this because I am a sucker for fancy packaging - fizzy red beer - zero head or lacing - tart cherry aroma, with some light notes of vanilla, which I’m assuming is from the oak, some grainy/wheaty notes - not much else happening there - medium body, light flavor - flavor is medium-tart, with some earthy/natural sour cherry flavors, notes of toasted cereal grains, wheat - the oak is present, but very subtle, and it actually compliments the cherry character quite well - very mild christmas-y spices underneath, especially as it warms - fairly tart and refreshing, but there is a certain depth missing.
