Samuel Adams Stony Brook Red: This unique brew defies traditional beer style definition. The rich, malty brew combines notes of tart fruit from the yeast with a toasty oak character from the barrel aging. The long dry finish is almost wine-like. This is a beer that is satisfying on its own and also pairs well with many foods such as braised or roasted meats, beef stews and strong salty cheeses.

Bottle. Pours reddish brown with thick off white head. Aroma of sour cherries, oak, and light vinegar. Flavor is tart and sour. Good mouthfeel. More fruity than sour but pretty good. Surprised at 9%. Drinks lighter.

Wow I am loving this. A nice sour flavor that isn’t too sweet. A bit of stickiness to this that is nice. I would buy this again in a second. The best Sam Adams in a while.

Like many people out there, I’ve been on a bit of a sour kick lately. Most that I’ve tasted have been really solid and I was anxiously awaiting tasting this offering from Sam Adams. Surprisingly, this just really missed the mark for me. The weight and texture of the beer just seemed to be off. The tart fruits were present but seemed to not pop. Muted and lackluster. I like Flemish beers but this is just not a great example from my point of view. Low marks. The bottles in this series are awesome though.

(750ml bottle) cloudy brown-ruby, lasting light tan head of fine bubbles. Nose of oak, cranberry, light vinous, caramel, red grapes, other dark dried fruit, lightly tannic. Taste of lightly toasted oak, cranberry, wet wood, very drinkable and pretty good!

When I saw a Sam Adams bottle with a cork in it, then saw it was a sour ale I thought it was going to be terrible. It wasn’t. Aroma was so so. Roasted malt, spices and sour cherry. Pour was a nice dark amber/light brown with a thin off white ring for a head. Taste was good for a mass produced beer. Strong vinegar, cherry and yeast flavors bite the sides of the mouth and prickle going down the throat. Nice strong carbonation creates a nice finish that leaves the mouth sour and acidic. Hides the alcohol perfectly. Good job

750 ml. bad ass barrel looking bottle- Pours dark brown to red with a light tan head that reduces to a blanket. Aroma is moderately funky, dark fruits, oak. Taste is very similar to Verhaeghe Duchesse De Bourgogne (which I had directly before this), but with more alcohol, this beer hides the alcohol expertly. There is a little less tartness here, and the beer has a slight graininess, but this is a nice beer. Are Sam Adams haters affecting the score here? Because this is nice!

Pours a delicious looking brown copper color. Tart fruit and a slight funk aroma. Clean and crisp tasting; some wine like components. Dry, tart fruit followed by a slight astringent feel on the palate. Overall, very surprising and delectable for a style that I’m not a big fan of.

Bottle. Pours with a very deep red/mahogany hued body with a small tan head. Aromas are of chocolate, vinous, tannic, nuts, currant, lactic acid, earthy, red wine, medium yeast esters and phenols, unripe plum, oak, vanillin, low acetone, light cough drop. Flavors are sweet upfront, dark and unripe plum, acetone, oak, vinous, prune, red wine, cherry pit. Low lactic acid in the finish. Very light acetic acid. Medium to fuller bready and caramel malt character. Alcohol noticeable. Malt character closer to an Oude Bruin (minus the oak). Lively carbonation with a dry finish, warming. I wish the sourness and funk complexity were stronger, but this was still a nice beer to drink.

Bottle. Pours deep amber copper color with a quick soapy khaki head that leaves a tight soapy collar and wispy film. Aroma is the best part of this beer nice and tart/sour with cherry some wine characteristics and malt. Taste is tart with subtle sourness and shows signs of wine and wet corks along with plenty of malt and cherry notes in the finish. Palate is full and slick with a drying funky finish. Not bad at all this is a nice surprise by Boston Beer Co.
