COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Samuel Adams Stony Brook Red: This unique brew defies traditional beer style definition. The rich, malty brew combines notes of tart fruit from the yeast with a toasty oak character from the barrel aging. The long dry finish is almost wine-like. This is a beer that is satisfying on its own and also pairs well with many foods such as braised or roasted meats, beef stews and strong salty cheeses.

Sour cherry, oak, boozy wine, and grapes. Cloudy brown-red color and sour-sweet taste. Semi-viscous due to its high ABV. Leaves a light tannic flavor in your mouth after drinking.

Light hoppiness. Nice woody overtones. Fruity pear flavor and cheery sourness. Definite dry finish. Nice beer lots of depth to the flavor. The more I drink, the more I like it.

Big bottle. Pours a dark mahogany color with diminishing head. Unique aroma of fruit, pear, wood notes. Taste is sour and sweetness. Yeast notes. Ripe fruits. Sour grape notes. Average carbonation. Spices. Not bad.

Bottle @ Bruce’s, picked up at Total Wine Naples. The pour’s deep red with a small head. The nose is red berry, brown sugar, mild tartness, some balsamic. The taste is earthy sweetness, pennies, peaches and cranberry. Strawberry fruit leather. Light body, active carbonation. Overall, quite a solid effort. Nice.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown more than red. Presents itself with a fizzy essence, very appley overall with a sharp finish. Bit of a yeastiness thing going on here too, not at all what I expected. Decent. (#5050, 6/1/2013)

Bottle at Bruce’s, thanks to Jack. Sexy looking bottle. It pours deep reddish-mahogany brown with a thick beige head. The nose is vinous, dark cherry, jammy, caramel, wood and candy cane. The taste is wood, dark fruit, berry, ripe cherry, vinous, red wine vinegar, earth and decent tanginess with a dry, bitter-sweet finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Very well balanced and rather tasty. Good work.

A steady pour into my teku glass produces a two finger thick, light amber tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a concentrated-amber / dark plum color that shows a brilliantly clear, rich amber / purple / plum hue when held up to the light. The aroma is vinous, oaky, tart, and fruity with specific notes of strawberry vinegar, red wine like fruit character, berry jam, some cider notes, a touch of nutty toasted malt character, and some light oak spice character.

This has a prickly carbonation and a medium level of fullness to the body; it sticks to the palate a bit, though lightens up a bit in the finish. The flavor is quite vinous, it reminds me quite a bit of a lightly oaked, fruit focused red wine. Bright berry notes, a light, accentuating acidity, and a touch of warmth in the finish; the latter seems to be a combination of the oak character and a bit of the alcohol. There is a nice nuttiness here that combines with the caramelized malt notes, and the lightly toasted browned malt character.

Not bad, actually a bit better than I was expecting. It could certainly use a bit more complexity, and it is certainly a bit on the strong side for what I was expecting, but I like that the character isn’t over the top in any manner, as this is a flaw in many an American attempt at this type of beer.

Somewhere: Pours reddish brown with a whitish head. Aroma is wine, vinegar, wood, and a little bit of alcohol. Taste is lactic, a bit sour. Some aftertaste with a little bite. A lot of woof in the flavor. Very minimal sweetness. Some minor fruitiness. Is kind of similar to wine in some ways. Pretty good.

Bottle. Was caught a bit off-guard at first because I thought this was a red ale until my first sip. Still, a very nice sour with some nice oak notes. Sam Adams impresses, never count them out of the craft beer conversation.

Poured into a snifter. Color is sort of a cherry/mahogany with little head. Aroma is sweet toasty malt with some tart sour cherry type fruit notes. Flavor is rich and fruity, quite wine-like. Has some sweet malty underpinnings. Reads like a barley wine. Full bodied with a slightly sticky mouthfeel. Overall a very twist on a red ale.
