When compared to other, better Oaked Imperial Stouts. In fact, the oak in this beer is more of an off-flavor than anything else. I’m glad I had this at a tasting as I wouldn’t have to drink the entirety of the bottle. Tried at the winter beer tasting in Dec. 2012. Courtesy of Brandon.

Dark brown pour with a creamy tan head. Nose is yeast and spice at first, cocoa and oak as it warms. Tastes of cocoa, light amount of oak, dark fruits, and yeast. Silky mouthful.

These are the coolest bottles I’ve seen in some time. As far as the beer is concerned, ehhh, this one could be better. Pours black with a red tinge and tan head. Aroma is primarily Belgian funk, with some notes of chocolate. Lively carbonation in the mouth, with some notes of coffee / chocolate. Finishes sticky with notes of funky sour cherry.

750 ml. brown cooper’s mallet shaped bottle. Corked & caged. No freshness date seen. Poured out a dark, inky black, with red highlights. Decent mocha colored head. Aromas are of chocolate bars, cardamom, oak barrels, some smoke. Flavors are of burnt chocolate, spices, strong malts. Medium mouthfeel, but rich & chewy too. Finished smooth for a big beer.

Bottle poured into glass. Thanks to Dos2 for bringing this one. Amongst all the other beers consumed that night this one was very meh. Decent chocolate presence with a tad of burnt charcoal, but overall it didn’t do much for me.

Shared at departmental picnic - thanks, David! God, these are the ugliest bottles but SA is still cool for doing this series. Nice sludgy pour, with a gritty medium tan head. Nose was inviting, pungently yeasty along with strong notes of chocolate, espresso, and oak. Pleasant, smooth mouthfeel with just a faint kiss of booze and the taste was pretty nice too, with some dark fruits emerging in the mix. Not quite as close to the Belgian stout style as the homebrew that was going around (!) but pretty nice.

I actually didn’t expect to like this as much as I do. Very delicious aroma of brown sugar and sweet tarts. Smooth mouthfeel of small bubbles. Not as thick as I would have liked, but good for something different. I really like the sourness of this stout. It makes it unique.

Thirteenth hour pours out of a very unique bottle Opaque black with hints of red. The head is a quickly disappearing mass of small bubbles mocha in color. Nose is sweet red fruit and chocolate liqueur. Thin body with some small lively bubbles. Taste is restrained red fruit with medium malt middle that has hints of bittersweet dark chocolate. I understand the rancor over this not being a typical stout. it is definitely in the belgian style. Still a good beer though.

Cool looking 750mL corked and caged bottle pours mahogany with thin tan head of foam. The aroma offers up modest levels of sour and wild yeast notes with a faint sense of malt roastiness in the background. The taste at first seemed odd and not what I was expecting. After only the second quaff it grew on me with a mix of chocolate, modest red wine tartness and a mild sense of sour notes and spicy oak. This is really coming together for me. Cool stuff.

Pours brown with a light brown head. Aroma of toffee, raisin, chocolate, port, and licorice. Flavor follows suit with a balance of dark berry and raisin flavors with dark chocolate, subtle coffee, and toffee malt. It’s held together by a spicy, fruity yeast character. Finishes with only a subtle roastiness, mild bitterness, but there’s a nice vanilla oaky flavor that envelopes the throat like many barrel aged beers do, just more subtle. Medium-heavy bodied with carbonation on the higher side. Good beer, I’m pleased with the flavor balance and use of Belgian yeast. There arent too many "Belgian stouts" that I really love, but this one strikes a nice balance to me.
