This traditional lager is medium in body with a deep roasted character. Its dark color and rich malty flavor come from specially roasted caramel and chocolate malts. This brew is lightly hopped with Noble Bavarian hops for a soft spiciness and a smooth clean finish. Cheers!

UPDATED: FEB 11, 2007 This is a wonderful beer. The aroma is toasty and chocolate. The is actually very dark and close to black. Nice head and nice lacing. Taste is also very good. It is reminiscent of chocolate and caramel just like it says on the bottle. Hops are subtle but perfectly balanced with the toasty malts. Sweet chocolate aftertaste. Yummy.

Looks and smells like a great beer. However, the taste is a profound letdown. Sickly sweet watery chocolate with a good dose of sour bread.

Pours dark brownish color with little tan colored head. Smells like chocolate, malty too, with a coffee smell. Flavor is really enjoyable. This is the first time Iíve tried this beer and would buy it again in a heart beat.

so this will be my first "black lager".the brew pours a deep, dark crimson red with a creamy/lumpy head.aromas of chocolate, malts, and earth.the flavor was much better than expected.coffee, malts, chocolate all form a medium/light body.this is very tastey.much like a smoked porter or light stout.

Bottle. Pours deep mahagoney, almost black, with a small tan foamy head that dissipates to a thin rocky film. Roasted and caramel malt aroma with a dark coffee, chocolate finish. Faint hop notes rise into the air as well. Initially smooth sweet dark chocolate flavor. It finishes lightly hoppy and spicy. Medium body and fizzy, a bit butpy, and crisp finish.

Ok now this is a good beer from sam adams. I got this bottle in a pack with the boston ale and hefe. The black lager is so far the best sam adams beer Iíve had and the first black beer Iíve had. Iíve gotta try some more black beer.

A very nice deep dark nut brown pour, topped with an incredibly creamy light tan head. Lucious aroma of wheat, caramel, light soy sauce and fresh vegetables. A little bit of toffee in the nose as well. Flavor is strong sweet caramelized malt, backed with pipe tobacco and nuts. Lots of roasted flavors, but not quite to the point of coffee or chocolate, stays more reserved with nuts and light fruit. Palate is average and a little cloyingly sweet and clingy. Yet alcohol makes for a warm and smooth finish. Nothing impressive on the back end, the flavor presents itself fully on the front end.

Did not for a second pick out that this was a schwarzbier, but now that I know it, it makes more sense. Rich, sweet roasted malt aroma. Dark brown in color; nearly opaque. Small, off white head. Excellent lace. Tastes like it smells. A good beer. A little overly sweet. I keep expecting this to be thin and itís just not. A pretty decent little beer. Once again, appears that the anti-Sam Adams bias is holding down the ratings on this one.

Pours brownish-red. Malty aroma with caramel notes. Flavor of chocolate and toffee. Nice balance. This beer breaks away from the "averageness" of the other beers from this brewer, and I like it quite a bit.
