4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours with a three-finger white head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Color is opaque and black. Medium bodied. Nose is roasted chocolate. Medium carbonation. Starts with a sweet roasted chocolate flavor, finish has just a hint of hops. One of the better offerings from Sam Adams. $1.85 for a 12 oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma. The ABV is 4.9%

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Surprisingly good schwarzbier from sam adams. Nice deep brown almost black color with a good sized head which fades. Good sweet robust and full malt aroma with hints of chocolate, and burnt malts. Flavor is on the light side, but not too light- with good slightly sweet malt, caramel, munich, and some chocolate. Balanced nicely almost so no hop flavor or aroma is there but enough to balance it in the finish and to prevent it from being cloying. Good smooth finish.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Deep brownish black, light tan creamy head. Really nice nose on this with notes of roasted caramel, milk chocolate, and toasted dark sweet bread, with light tones of marshmallow creme enveloping it all. The flavor is very similar with roasty, toasty, milk chocolate flavors up front, followed by light coffee tones, and a decent hop bitterness that pulls this all together. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, smooth, toasted, bittersweet finish. Really enjoyed this brew. Very drinkable....

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Shadowy dark tarnished brown with a big billowing light cocoa hued head of foam; lightly fluffing and spongyness ensues as it grows up fast from a heavy pour. Fades off moderately to a good solid skimming and lacing of all kinds lightly grab the glass.
Nice aroma of dry black malts with a mild touch of chocolate sweetness and vanilla cookies. Very aromatic and appetizing to wiff in.
Flavors are just as nice, a bit more sweetness intersedes the front end with some black and chocolate malt, middle is seemingly like Oreo cookies, finishes with a nice leveling of moderate dry bite of slight roast, chocolate powder, and light Noble-like hopping. Very nice finish, did I just eat an Oreo?
Feel is fluffy, carrying a sweet front, drying most ways across from there, slight crispness to its body as well. Body is about medium to medium/light with a favorably low carbonation making for some kicked-back, sliding-down-the-Ol’-gullet, easy goin’ drinkability. A big time session beer that actually has a different taste then most other session types. A nice version of a hard to pin down style. This may be close to rivaling Black Bavarian.
Way to go BBC! Nice brew.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours dark mahogany with a medium brown head. Aroma of caramel and cocoa, with a slight sourness. Flavor is sweet roastiness and caramel with a sourness in the middle, leaving a lasting cocoa flavor in the finish. Very drinkable and smooth.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: DEC 6, 2008 [12 oz. bottle] Clear black color that looks red when held up to the light. Very decent and creamy looking tan head. Slightly fruity and sweet smell with hints of roasted caramel and malts throughout. Very rich taste of sweetness, probably from the roasted caramel malt, and a nice roasted and smoky finish. I think I’m a pretty big fan of this one.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
I really like this offering from Sammy A. Probably one of their better common beers, if not the best. Distinct roast chocolate and coffee caramel taste. Has a nice enough nose, but lacks a good head.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: DEC 30, 2005 Sweet, yeasty cocoa nut aroma. Sweetish, hazelnutty, grassy, roasty. Quite good and drinkable. Medium-light body. Medium cola and chocolate finish. Rerate Hmm. Not sure what I loved about this orignially. It is drinkable, but it’s a little simpler than I originally thought.

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
04.16.05 Brewtopia ’05. Finally, a schwarzbier that reminds me why I don’t like the style. Black pour, medium head. Chocolate notes (dark) and old coffee. Grassy, German hops. Cardboard. Watery body that just doesn’t match the color OR aromas. Abrupt finish except for a lingering oxidation. Blech.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
This is a promising beer. It pours a dark dark ruby and smells like cocoa and roasted barley. There is a light Tettnang or Hallertau nose. No head remains even after an aggessive pour. Tastes like a sweet malt, caramel, and slight hops, however, these give out to the watery taste of a beer that should be higher in strength. Overall, this is a good beer, but where can you find it other than in a sampler box??
