COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This traditional lager is medium in body with a deep roasted character. Its dark color and rich malty flavor come from specially roasted caramel and chocolate malts. This brew is lightly hopped with Noble Bavarian hops for a soft spiciness and a smooth clean finish. Cheers!

UPDATED: DEC 6, 2008 [12 oz. bottle] Clear black color that looks red when held up to the light. Very decent and creamy looking tan head. Slightly fruity and sweet smell with hints of roasted caramel and malts throughout. Very rich taste of sweetness, probably from the roasted caramel malt, and a nice roasted and smoky finish. I think Iím a pretty big fan of this one.

I really like this offering from Sammy A. Probably one of their better common beers, if not the best. Distinct roast chocolate and coffee caramel taste. Has a nice enough nose, but lacks a good head.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2005 Sweet, yeasty cocoa nut aroma. Sweetish, hazelnutty, grassy, roasty. Quite good and drinkable. Medium-light body. Medium cola and chocolate finish. Rerate Hmm. Not sure what I loved about this orignially. It is drinkable, but itís a little simpler than I originally thought.

04.16.05 Brewtopia í05. Finally, a schwarzbier that reminds me why I donít like the style. Black pour, medium head. Chocolate notes (dark) and old coffee. Grassy, German hops. Cardboard. Watery body that just doesnít match the color OR aromas. Abrupt finish except for a lingering oxidation. Blech.

This is a promising beer. It pours a dark dark ruby and smells like cocoa and roasted barley. There is a light Tettnang or Hallertau nose. No head remains even after an aggessive pour. Tastes like a sweet malt, caramel, and slight hops, however, these give out to the watery taste of a beer that should be higher in strength. Overall, this is a good beer, but where can you find it other than in a sampler box??

Sampled at Brewtopia 2005. Poured black with a creamy off-whtie head, very attractive. Fanit aroma of chocolate notes. Tastes of roasted chocolate, but feels somewhat watered down, typical Samuel Adams mediocrity.

Tanned medium sized head with black color beer resting in the glass( reddish/ brown against light) Roasted malt aroma along with a chocolate olfaction. Flavor is mild and has traces of milk and chocolate with the roast malt over dominating the two. A mighty fine dark lager to sit at home and watch some baseball with.

Pours a brownish-black color with a medium thin light tan head and thin lacing. Aroma of chocolate and coffee as well as a hint of nuts. Medium-bodied with a sweet malt and chocolate flavor. Trace amounts of coffee and hops are present too. The finish is smooth and dry but not too flavorful. As with many of Sam Adamsí one-offs, this is above average.

12 oz bottle. Smooth creamy tan head tops a lustrous black caramel body...licorice and tobacco make inroads into the huge malty nose, offering complexity and fun...cry cola-esque nose, tarry and chocolaty, with late sweet herbs and lasting dry cocoa, strong bitter long finish. Near the top from this brewer, excellent.
