COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This traditional lager is medium in body with a deep roasted character. Its dark color and rich malty flavor come from specially roasted caramel and chocolate malts. This brew is lightly hopped with Noble Bavarian hops for a soft spiciness and a smooth clean finish. Cheers!

I was pleasantly surprised by Samís Black Lager. It has a nice light smokey flavor, and a medium-light body. A good beer to tweak the tastebuds every once in a while.

Bottle. Poured a deep black with medium tan head. Aroma was roasted malt and chocolate. The flavor was rich with malt hops and sweet smooth finish. Good drinkable brew.

I havenít had anything Iíve really enjoyed in from the Lager department in quite a long time. This stuff really packs the flavor in though. Itís definitely milder than the ales Iíve been drinking, but heavier also. Dark reddish-black with a small, quickly receding, light brown head. A bit fizzy on the palate.

UPDATED: MAR 13, 2007 Very heady pour. Coffee ice cream colored head. Nice lacing. Dark brown-red color.Tastes of roasted barley, fresh grain, and a bit of fruityness. Smokey finish. Coffee-like aroma. Smooth finish, similar to any other Sam Adams brew. Overall a tasty beer. Maybe Iíd pair this one with read meat, but not a hamburger.

I think this is the first schwarzbier Iíve rated. Aroma is reminiscent of a fishy smoked porter - like the Alaskan. Pours like a fine stout. First taste is all smokiness but there isnít too much afterwards. Good but not outstanding.

Very dark brown; initially a nice, brown, frothy head that disappears rather quickly. Aroma is heavy with tons of caramel and malt; perhaps a little chocolate and licorice. Flavor is a bit thin--mostly caramel and malts; slightly buttery. Medium body; a little thin. Not bad; certainly unusual.

A thick malty nose with a waft of caramel winds it way up from this dark chestnut brew. Graced with a rocky tan head, this beer delivers a mostly malty flavor profile. Bittersweet dark chocolate prescence has a slightly tangly finish. A soft bitterness lingers at the very tail end of the swallow. A nice burly mouthfeel rounds out this excellent Shwarzbier. Pour me another!

Pours a dark mahogany brown with a thick, but short-lived frothy tan head. Aroma is semi-sweet and malty with a touch of candy corn and lager yeast. Body starts with a nice caramel malty sweetness, turning slightly more dry before the crisp, authentic, lager yeasty finish. Palate has a strange, almost artificial thickness to it and, I donít say this often, but would probably be better and more authentic if it were a little thinner. Overall, a fairly decent schwarzbier though.

Say what you will, but it is very nice to see a national brewer try a Schwarzbier. Imagine that happening 15 years ago. This is a very good beer with a nice rocky head. The flavors are what I expect, a little chocolate and a lot of good basic malt flavors. There is nothing not to like here. I cannot help but voice my disappointment that it was not a Dunkel that they released. I shouldnít let that enter into my decision as to how to rate it, but I do.

Bottle. Deep reddish-brown with a small light tan head that lingered for a while and left some lacing. The smell of this beer reminded me very much of a porter, with raisons, hazelnuts, chocolate and pipe tobacco the dominant aromas. The flavor is smooth and a little subdued, and tastes of chocolate, coffee, walnuts and nutmeg. The aftertaste reminded me of slightly overdone wheat toast with butter.
