3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
355ml bottle, poured into a lager glass. Appearance is clear brownish black with a small tan head with good retention. Aroma of roasted malts, dark chocolate and coffee. Flavour of roasted malts, dark chocolate, coffee, dark muscovado and a hint of caramel and charcuteries. Taste is light sweet and medium bitter. Palate is medium bodied, smooth texture, soft carbonation. A great beer for the style, has relatively full body and the taste is well balanced.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Very impressive beige head--a solid three fingers thick--leaves Pollock inspired lacing on the glass side. Light barely penetrates through the deep brown (no reddish hue) liquor. Appears to be clear.
Strong dark chocolate notes, a touch of burnt toast, and toasted marshmallow. Similar smells to a well-made porter.
Crisp like a lager should be. The beginning of the taste is surprisingly neutral--malt flavors but not as obvious as the smell might indicate. The real treat comes from the swallow--strong caramel and dark chocolate notes with a wonderful blend of hop spiciness. The carbonation also shows up here. The aftertaste is surprisingly dry. In fact, the entire tasting devoid of any significant sweetness.
A short description would be a "lagered porter", meaning it doesn’t have the roundness of typical fare. Working from memory, this is a more flavorful schwarzbier than others I’ve had. Worthy of a six-pack.

Aroma af karamel. Ristet malt, karamel. Klar, mørkerød. Medium fylde, fint i forhold til smag. Cremet carb og skum. En smule bitterhed og syre mod slutningen.

4.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
This brew is appealing to the eye and to the taste buds. She has an attractive shade of black and a feel that’s appropriately crisp and smooth for a lager. Flavor is extraordinarily complex. First, there’s a fresh, bitter hop character that’s delicious by itself. But then, there’s robust toasted malt and dark chocolate. The finish is fairly bitter, but with some subtle caramel. Another great dark beer from Samuel Adams.

Better than other black lagers that I’ve had..roasted malts and chocolate definitely come through.
