Bottle. Overall a pleasant beer. A touch of coffee is present in the aroma.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
The body is dark black in color and very nearly opaque with some ruby red highlights along the sides of the glass. There is some visible carbonation near the sides of the glass as well. On top sits a thick tan head with very good retention. It makes some good lace rings on the glass as I drink. The aroma is sweet and bready with some mild hints of smoke and burnt sugar. There is sweet buttery toffee and light caramel notes up front. This gives way to a robust espresso character with a light dusting of bittersweet chocolate. It finishes with some mild hop bitterness and dryness. The palate is medium bodied with a smooth texture and mild yet active carbonation.

UPDATED: APR 6, 2015 This beer was actually a minor disappointment for me. The taste is weird and stale. However, it is still an approved beer that slips down without much trouble.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, best before 8/2014. Pours crystal clear deep brown color with a 2 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, toast, dark bread, chocolate, roasted malt, raisin, plum, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of big caramel, molasses, toast, dark bread, chocolate, roasted malt, raisin, plum, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, molasses, toast, dark bread, chocolate, roast, raisin, plum, herbal, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; with great robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy, smooth, and lightly chalky/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 4.9%. Overall this is a damn nice schwarzbier! All around good balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Transfer from BA reviewed - 1-16-12 -
Poured from bottle into pint glass
Appearance - A nice dark brew with a slightly tan head. This gives way very quickly to give little lacing.
Smell - Roasted malt mixed with a bit of roasted nut meet a chocolate aroma. hidden at first, but developing as time goes on is a bit of sweet caramel aroma
Taste - Sweeter malts and roasted coffee flavor first meet the tongue. the cocoa flavor then takes control, but slowly fades to some of the bitter hop and a bitter roast taste. The initial flavors are quite pleasant, but the bitterness at the end sorta lingers, not in a very good way.
(note - I let the beer warm a bit and some of the bitterness seemed to diminish which gave the brew a very nice flavor profile actually)
Mouthfeel - A nice body with a good level of carbonation. Creamy and smooth.
Overall - If it wasn’t for the very bitter aftertaste it would be one quite tasty beer. If you are a fan of roasted bitter though, this may be for you.

UPDATED: JUL 15, 2014 500 ml bottle @ Rock More Pub, Viking Grace
Reddish cola colored beer with blonde head. Aromas of chocolate, bread, roasted malts and herbal hops. Flavor has roasted malts and bread. Palate is medium full with high carbonation. Finishes with a medium bite of bitterness, leaving an aftertaste of roasted and sweet malts and coffee acidicy. Kind of basic schwarzbier with mild aromas.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Black body with a smaller khaki head. Aroma isn’t too special, faded european hops and a little bit of roasted malts. Much better flavor, lots of roasted nuts with none of the harsh ashiness I’ve gotten from some schwarzbier. Surprisingly thick and satisfying. Served as Black and Gold at the Sam Adams "brewery" in JP, apparently you can also buy this at the Garden. Really pleased with this one.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20

2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Svart med brun krona som dock inte håller länge. Doftar rostad malt och smakar detsamma men kroppen är tunn och saknar fyllighet och djup. En ok öl men inte mer.

2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours a nice dark black with tan head. Very roasty on the nose, almost like a burnt smell. Some chocolate and roasted malt on the palate. Not overly complex for the style, sort of one dimensional.
