COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This traditional lager is medium in body with a deep roasted character. Its dark color and rich malty flavor come from specially roasted caramel and chocolate malts. This brew is lightly hopped with Noble Bavarian hops for a soft spiciness and a smooth clean finish. Cheers!

Shopping for Sam Adams is alot like sifting through the sales rack at a department store...mostly shit, but if you’re patient you can find a thing or two that’s worth buying. I generally do not expect much from any lager...with that said, I also feel that most lagers smell like fuckin shit. This smelled like a Heineken Dark, but was barren of the skunky flavor that most lagers have inherently...this went down easy and quickly...another good session brew from a company that makes sooooo many shitty beers...

Bottle, 355ml. Pours close to black, deep dark colour with beige head. Bready, dark roasted, light smokey, dusty malt, bread and burnt sugar in the nose combined with milk chocolate. Roasted malt, rye and break flavour. Mild bitter end with coffee and dusty earthy hobs. Medium body - and soft carbonation. Easy drinkable.

Almost pitch black with a medium head, some lacing. Aroma is really dark malty, rye, coffee, mämmi, roast. Hardly a lager considering the aroma. Taste is dark malty, yet drinkable. Rye and dark roast, coffee. Rather dull though, not very fresh. Not a beer of my style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Huge tan head, ulti-dark ruby clear body, crocheted laceworks. Aroma; sweet mocca-liquorice, dust, hay, meadow’s flowers. Taste; chocolate malts, hazelnuts, prunes, almond. Nice on palate, slightly slightly watery only. Finishes with chocolate, raisin, nut-sauce, lingering. Fresh tasty beer. Well brewed. The body is dark black in color and very nearly opaque with some ruby red highlights along the sides of the glass. There is some visible carbonation near the sides of the glass as well. On top sits a thick tan head with very good retention. It makes some good lace rings on the glass as I drink. The aroma is sweet and bready with some mild hints of smoke and burnt sugar. There is sweet buttery toffee and light caramel notes up front. This gives way to a robust espresso character with a light dusting of bittersweet chocolate. It finishes with some mild hop bitterness and dryness. The palate is medium bodied with a smooth texture and mild yet active carbonation.

This beer was actually a minor disappointment for me. The taste is weird and stale. However, it is still an approved beer that slips down without much trouble.

12 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, best before 8/2014. Pours crystal clear deep brown color with a 2 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, toast, dark bread, chocolate, roasted malt, raisin, plum, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of big caramel, molasses, toast, dark bread, chocolate, roasted malt, raisin, plum, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, molasses, toast, dark bread, chocolate, roast, raisin, plum, herbal, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; with great robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy, smooth, and lightly chalky/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 4.9%. Overall this is a damn nice schwarzbier! All around good balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Transfer from BA reviewed - 1-16-12 - Poured from bottle into pint glass Appearance - A nice dark brew with a slightly tan head. This gives way very quickly to give little lacing. Smell - Roasted malt mixed with a bit of roasted nut meet a chocolate aroma. hidden at first, but developing as time goes on is a bit of sweet caramel aroma Taste - Sweeter malts and roasted coffee flavor first meet the tongue. the cocoa flavor then takes control, but slowly fades to some of the bitter hop and a bitter roast taste. The initial flavors are quite pleasant, but the bitterness at the end sorta lingers, not in a very good way. (note - I let the beer warm a bit and some of the bitterness seemed to diminish which gave the brew a very nice flavor profile actually) Mouthfeel - A nice body with a good level of carbonation. Creamy and smooth. Overall - If it wasn’t for the very bitter aftertaste it would be one quite tasty beer. If you are a fan of roasted bitter though, this may be for you.
