illidurit (431), Santa Cruz, California, USA Oct 5, 2008 12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Deep brown color with dazzling ruby highlights. Ecru head of a half finger that displays average retention and lacing. Aromas of cocoa, milk chocolate, and graham cracker, with maybe a little sweetened coffee. Very alluring smell. Flavor is more roasty, with dark chocolate and some char to go along with some light caramel. Hops play a minor role but are spicy in nature and a welcome spot of balance. Mouthfeel is typically Sam Adams: just a little too thin to support the flavor profile. Still one of the best of their regular lineup.
MaltDawg (369), Richmond, Virginia, USA Oct 5, 2008 Dark roast and chocolate malts with hint of spicy hops. Clear very dark amber brown with small tan head. Light Body with medium creamy mouth feel. Finish is malty with touch of grain astringency and bitterness. Yeah I really like this beer. nqualls (422), Tennessee, USA Oct 4, 2008 Bottle. Poured a black color with a thin brown head. Aroma and flavor of roasted malt, with a slight hop background. Good beer. 1010 (60), Marysville, Ohio, USA Oct 3, 2008 Pours a black color with little head. Taste of roasted malt.
12 oz. bottle from a 12 pack sampler craftycarl21 (211), South Hero, Vermont, USA Oct 3, 2008 pours a dark brown with a decent frothy head, slow to dissipate. Aroma is pretty basic, mostly malt and hops, maybe a touch of caramel. Flavor is thick with roasted malt, dark chocolate, and some sweetness- probably the caramel again- nicely balanced for a sam adams. Palate is good, stays strong but not overbearing in any way. One of Boston Beer Co’s better offerings.
