4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
I agree with BuckeyeNation and have modified some of his comments and added my own in this review.
Dark walnut brown with red highlights. The golden beige crown is two fingers to start but did not last long. Fair lacing.
The aroma is more dark malty than anticipated and is huskily, muskily, earthily hoppy. Given what I know about schwarzbiers (not much), the nose is right on.
Black Lager is pretty tasty. It isnít a wow! kind of beer, but itís unquestionably well-brewed. Thereís more flavor than expected and more roasted malt as well. This is the second time Iíve tried this beer. The first time being last autumn. I will say that either my palate has improved or this beer has. I like it so much more than then. A good amount of black/chocolate maltiness. The hops more than hold their own and are as important in the grand scheme of things as the malt.
The flavor profile consists of cocoa, dark caramel and, surprisingly, black coffee. Those flavors are complementary to each other (as well as to the herbal, earthy, slighty spicy hops) and are soft and powdery in character as opposed to charred. The mouthfeel is on the light side of medium, which it maintains all the way to and through the finish.
This may be the best offering from Boston Beer Company. Black Lager is very good and was a nice surprise. Good stuff.

Dark, roasty malt with a bit of cocoa, char, and dark fruit. Fairly balanced overall.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sam Adamís Black Lager, is well, black. The color is self-explanatory, I think. Things get interesting with the aroma, where I get a heavy pepper scent, conjuring images of teriyaki jerky. But on second examination thereís an even nicer, subtler and more complex touch of peat, adding a low, deep earthiness, thickening the aroma. The flavor is much maltier and simpler - more like your standard winter warmer. The aroma is where the interesting dimensions are, so linger here with your nose. The flavor, while fine, doesnít live up to the aromaís nuance.

Notes of caramel, chocolate, and licorice. Perfect appearance and foam for the style.
Delicious taste, creamy and not over carbonated. Well balanced sweetness and bitterness.

3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
This lager (although it is black and looks like a stout, it is therefore a lager!) Has a very nice, but brief, light brown foam. It smells very pleasant and sweet of hard roasted malt which does not allow much room for the subtle hop aroma. Furthermore, it smells a bit of English liquorice. It has a deep and protracted flavor of malt tones. Both the sweet caramel malt, but also the more savory malts which together provide a large richness in taste. Mouth feeling is creamy to bold and in the finale comes a gentle, yet sufficiently rich, hop bitterness. This beer lives completely up to its German roots and I really had also expected when it comes from one of the best microbreweries (in my opinion) in the US.

Very dark beer that is smooth and has a real roast flavor to it. It is pretty malty and dark.
