COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This traditional lager is medium in body with a deep roasted character. Its dark color and rich malty flavor come from specially roasted caramel and chocolate malts. This brew is lightly hopped with Noble Bavarian hops for a soft spiciness and a smooth clean finish. Cheers!

I agree with BuckeyeNation and have modified some of his comments and added my own in this review. Dark walnut brown with red highlights. The golden beige crown is two fingers to start but did not last long. Fair lacing. The aroma is more dark malty than anticipated and is huskily, muskily, earthily hoppy. Given what I know about schwarzbiers (not much), the nose is right on. Black Lager is pretty tasty. It isn’t a wow! kind of beer, but it’s unquestionably well-brewed. There’s more flavor than expected and more roasted malt as well. This is the second time I’ve tried this beer. The first time being last autumn. I will say that either my palate has improved or this beer has. I like it so much more than then. A good amount of black/chocolate maltiness. The hops more than hold their own and are as important in the grand scheme of things as the malt. The flavor profile consists of cocoa, dark caramel and, surprisingly, black coffee. Those flavors are complementary to each other (as well as to the herbal, earthy, slighty spicy hops) and are soft and powdery in character as opposed to charred. The mouthfeel is on the light side of medium, which it maintains all the way to and through the finish. This may be the best offering from Boston Beer Company. Black Lager is very good and was a nice surprise. Good stuff.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tumbler in late 2013. A: Black as night. No head. S: Coffee, malt. T: Coffee, malt, caramel. M: Quite a bit of carbonation. Feels a little too watery too. O: Enjoyable, but there are better schwarzbiers out there.

Opaque dark brown and a ringed eggshell head. Soft choc, softer roast, battery tinny. Soft choc initial taste and little else. Medium carbonation and grippy mouthfeel. Finishes not too bad but not too rusty.

Bottle. Very dark red color. Medium-big head which lasts. Aromas of toast, dates, caramel and chocolate. Really nice. In flavor dates, vanilla, chocolate. Full body. Sweet. Chocolate aftertaste. Wow. This is example of how lager beers actually can be flavorfull, and not so boring. Really good stuff.

dark brown, roasted, fairly aromatic and slightly thin and dry, this is a nice example of the style. Doesn’t do anything great, but does everything well. recommended as part of a sampler."
