COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The blackberries we use in Samuel Adams® Blackberry Witbier are perfect for this brew. They deliver a subtle sweetness that balances the traditional citrus flavors from the witbier. The blackberries used in Samuel Adams Blackberry Witbier are sourced from family farms, located at the foot of the Oregon Trail and Cascade Mountains in Western Oregon, where they have been growing some of the best blackberries in the world for centuries. By bringing the blackberries, orange and coriander together with an appealing malt character and a spiciness from the hops, we’ve brewed a flavorful beer with a smooth finish that’s both sweet and tart. Samuel Adams® Blackberry Witbier is brewed with two-row Harrington and Metcalfe malted barley and generous portions of malted wheat. The malted barley and malted wheat provide the beer with its light body while the coriander and orange give the beer its citrus like aromas. We’ve also added some Oregon Marion blackberries, to give the brew a perfect balance between its subtly sweet and tart flavors.

POured a pretty weak golden color with a white head. Aroma was straight blackberry syrup. Flavor was much the same a little spice and wheatiness mixed in but just way to sweet and one dimensional

UPDATED: JUN 23, 2009 Pours a pale yellow orange and somewhat cloudy with a small white froth. Aroma is mildly tart with a bit of bite. This gave me high hopes. Some fruity notes behind the wheat, however it was a little too candy or pop-tart filling fruity. Flavor started out sweet and malty, and I still had my hopes up. Some mild fruit berry flavors mid swallow. The spiciness that they advertised was very subtle. In the finish that tartness starts to build and I was ready to be excited, and then.....nothing. I know it is a witbier and they aren’t tart but c’mon, blackberry’s have to be more tart! Anyway, medium body and low-medium carbonation. I was just disappointed. I ended up voting for the coffee stout, which was okay, and still managed to have more complexity than this one. I really wanted to like it more, and it wasn’t bad, just fell short. I like the nifty bottle opener they gave me though :)

Sample A bottle. Pours a nice golden orange. Perfumy spritzy aroma of blackberry & some additional fruitiness. Taste has nice berry flavor & some wit crispiness. Decent but a little toosweet & perfumy. Bring back the boysenberry

Sampled at Sam Adams R&D Brewery in Boston. Poured hazy gold in color with a small head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of berries, wheat and some fruity esters. Taste is pretty much the same. Body was a little thin.

Sampled at the brewery tasting event. Cloudy golden color with a white head and good cover. Strong blackberry aroma, sweet dark fruit juice cocktail. Light on the tongue, smooth wheat with a biting coriander spiciness and intensely sweet blackberry syrup finish. This was my pick although it is just barely too sweet.

Sampled at Grape & Gourmet. Hazy gold with a thin white head. Really nice nose, bursting with blackberry. Flavor, not so much. Dry wheatiness, a bit of citrus - where did all the berry go? Still actually pretty tasty.

Was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. Sam Adams Rep was at the Winking Lizard last night giving out samples and ballots to vote. Very cool! Poured a nice golden color. Lively carbonation. Sweet smell of blackberries. Flavor was sweet up front and a bit of a bitter funk on the back end. I am not a fan of fruit beers and this one, while good for the masses, was a bit overly carbonated for me. Tasted like a flavored seltzer water. Gee...Guess what one I voted for? Hah...

[Draft @ Sam Adams R&D Brewery] Poured a lightly hazy golden color with a thin ring of white bubbles around the glass. Aroma of blackberries, citrus fruits, orange peel, and a touch of caramel. Taste of orange peel, citrus fruits, sweeter blackberries, and a non-descript finish.
