3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours dark brown with a small fizzy white head. Aroma of molasses and smoky beef jerky. Flavor has a lot of porter character, but is just smoky and delicious. Medium body with a very smoky finish. I love rauchbeer.

2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Reviewed from notes.
The appearance was a dark amber hazy body, no head, no lacing.
The smell had smokey meaty coming through in a dull bland way
The was exactly the same as the smell and was really heavy.
The palate sat about a medium, not exactly sessionable (at IMO), bland sticky aftertaste pounding all around my tongue, assault by carbonation, bland meaty finish.
Overall, however I guess this still fits the style, but Iím not a fan of this whatsoever.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
10/4/2011. 12 oz. bottle from a mixed seasonal case. Amber color with a tan head. Sweet aromas of caramel, malt and with a hint of smoke. Flavors hold the smoke and caramel throughout and the finish is light hops. I like this one.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 oz bottle shared by shigadeyo. Pours a slightly hazy deep orange amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet malts, moderate smoked character, lightly fruity, a hint of peat. The smoke is constantly there, but not overbearing.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle:   Garnet colored, large frothy sandy head, spotty lacing.   Smoked malt aroma, slight plastic and band-aid, every so slight.   Otherwise charred wood and burnt apples.   Less of the plastic and band-aid I
smelled on the nose, which is nice.   Not as malty as I would have liked, seems a touch thin.   As it warms it becomes a little simple, soft smoked malts and thats about it.   The smoke aspect needs to be more pronounced,
more ashy/woody.   Like a lot of other Sam Adams beers, this is a lighter version of many out there, which perhaps would make for a good gateway Rauchbier.   Not bad, but needs a little more umph.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Smoky aroma with a bready malt scent too. Doesnít look like much, and no head or lace to it. Smoked flavor is pretty strong and has a bit of a lingering after taste. They have made better, but would be good with skme bbq.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Lots of smoke in the nose, which also comes through strong in the flavor. Woody, and a very subtle sweetness that balances the smoke nicely. Perfect for drinking while sitting in front of the fire.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a dark, cloudy brown color with a thin head that dissolves quickly. Smokey malts are the most noticeable scent. You donít have to search for the tastes as the smoked malts hit the taste buds right away. Has a great body and texture to go along with its unique taste. For whatever reason itís pretty hard to find a smoked beer as Iíve only ever had 2 out of trying over 200+ beers. This one is delicious and probably one of my favorite Sam Adams products.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
November 23rd, 2011 - Rauchbiers are kind of combustible. This makes sense for a beer that reeks and tastes of smoke. But by combustible, I mean that rauchbiers are prone to being too smoky, or hyper-saturated, and even the smallest sip can be like licking the end of a smoked pork butt. Mercifully, Sam Adamsí rauchbier is finely tuned to keep the drinker drinking. It is, of course, a dark color, and the aroma is predictably smokey and intense. Smoked ham is the bulk of the aromatic character, but an appreciable vinegar tang is evident as well. Like an oatmeal stout, the aroma is not necessarily sweet, but just substantial. The body is slightly thinner than I expected, but this gives it a more drinkable quality, and thatís something an intensely flavored brew like this might need. Indeed, this brew reminds me of the warm, robust broth of a good shoyu ramen, and that means this tastes like something that is better as a broth than a drink. But the deep umami richness benefits this beer, and its drinker, with a flavor profile that leans more heavily towards soy sauce than other rauchbiers. Good, drinkable and engaging, this might be the star of my Sam Adams winter box set.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours reddish-brown with a large off-white head. Moderately sweet aroma with notes of smoke, bread and caramel. Moderately sweet flavor of roasted malts, light smoke, caramel and a faint, strange fruitiness. Light throughout with a weak finish. Not bad but could have down without the strange fruity notes.
