Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams® Boston Ale was first brewed to celebrate the opening of our Boston Brewery. Like Samuel Adams Boston Lager®, it was an old family recipe that was rescued by Jim Koch from his father’s attic. Samuel Adams® Boston Ale, a Stock Ale, has a complex, caramel malt character balanced with distinct spicy and herbal hop notes. Our proprietary ale yeast imparts a variety of fruit and ester notes in both the nose and flavor which are indicative of the style. Stock Ale, one of the few classic beer styles to have originated in the United States, has a strong New England heritage. The style draws its name from the cool "stock cellars" in which it was aged. This technique imparted a smoothness and body which became the hallmark of this style. Keeping with the Stock Ale style, Samuel Adams® Boston Ale is fermented at cooler almost lager like temperatures and conditioned much longer than most ales. It also is Krausened and dry hopped.

Bottle pour. CLear amber color with a small white head. Excellent lacing! Light malt aroma and light hops with perhaps some banana in there too. Moderately bitter finish. Light body. Dry. Soft carbonation. Samuel Adams doesn’t do too many things bad, just too many things average.

35cl bottle @ Balsam Cocktail Lounge, Oslo Norway. Beautiful color. Clean nose and crispy taste. A great introduction to ales for lagerdrinkers!

Bottle. Pours a copper color with a big white head. The aroma is of caramel and malts. Tastes more malty than caramel and not amazing.

The aroma is an earthy, malty experience. Not bad, but not remarkable. The earthiness probably originates in the yeast used to ferment the beer. The color is an amber, reddish color. Persistent white head. The flavor is malty, slightly sweet and caramelly, not too remarkable. The palate is mostly malt sweetness, which disappears fast. This is an OK beer, but I respectfully submit, Sam adams broke the mold with this beer, and paved the way for the microbrew revolution. [BTW, I did this beer in conjunction with the Sam Adams Boston Lager. I figured this was the best way to see thge difference between Ales and Lagers, assuming that they have the roughly same ingredients for the most part. The lager proved to be smoother and more drinkable for the most part. What do you think?]

35cl bottle from Systembolaget. It poured an amber orange colour with a big creamy head. The aroma is a bit complex and smells of dark caramel and malts. The flavor is slightly bitter and also tastes of dark caramel, malts and spices. It has a long lingering aftertaste.

Once again Boston Brewery, it’s brewers and its marketing team give their beers a touch of luxury in a price class accessible to all. The Boston Ale is true to this tradition, giving off a solid though unremarkable flavor in nearly the same class bracket as other macro brews. A pour from the bottle elicits a mottled wood-shaving colored head, violently pocked like a chunk of coral. Skunk, copper, mineral water and wet grain all amalgamate in a creamy textured aroma, giving off the raw scents of a brewery in action, but little else. The taste is different, but seems out of focus, with its fuzzy carbonation, light caramel and candied apple sweets and a wading pool deep vat of malts, with trace amounts of hazelnut and chocolate flavors. In other words, this brew has an uncanny abundance of flavor, if somewhat plain, but its certainly generous with what it delivers, and at an attractive price.
