Samuel Adams® Boston Ale was first brewed to celebrate the opening of our Boston Brewery. Like Samuel Adams Boston Lager®, it was an old family recipe that was rescued by Jim Koch from his father’s attic. Samuel Adams® Boston Ale, a Stock Ale, has a complex, caramel malt character balanced with distinct spicy and herbal hop notes. Our proprietary ale yeast imparts a variety of fruit and ester notes in both the nose and flavor which are indicative of the style. Stock Ale, one of the few classic beer styles to have originated in the United States, has a strong New England heritage. The style draws its name from the cool "stock cellars" in which it was aged. This technique imparted a smoothness and body which became the hallmark of this style. Keeping with the Stock Ale style, Samuel Adams® Boston Ale is fermented at cooler almost lager like temperatures and conditioned much longer than most ales. It also is Krausened and dry hopped.

Pretty average. A little lighter in color than one might expected. Its good for S. Adams, I guess... I’m never really TOO impressed. Malty and I do get a little bit of spices. I’d buy again (at dinner this time). Maybe its better than the lager, it didn’t really stand out in my memory either.

355 ml bottle. Clear, deep golden amber, medium beige head, lively carbonation. Aroma is sweet, bready and malty. Mouthfeel is fizzy, thin and dry at the end. Taste is biscuity, bready and caramelly, some toffee notes. Nice Amber Ale, a bit too carbonated to be top notch.

Pours a copper from a bottle. Caramel aroma, flavor is similar but with a decidedly bready aspect, almost like a sourdough. Drinkable but not anything over the top. Good beer.

Echon (388) - Århus, DENMARK - AUG 1, 2016
Dark amber. Caramel malt and noble hops are at the front, with a moderately sweet and bitter taste. Bitter finish. Medium body. Overall, a decent amber ale, but too sweet and too simple to warrant any revisits.

Gehbe (268) - Vilnius, LITHUANIA - JUL 8, 2016
Pours clear deep amber with big tan head, nice lacing. Aroma of dried apricot, spice, toast and biscuit, caramel and lemon. Tastes medium sweet and with some sourness upfront, light bitterness emerging after a few seconds. Medium body, fairly high carbonation, a little stickiness in aftertaste. Better than expected: well balanced, very drinkable yet sufficiently complex.
