Samuel Adams® Boston Ale was first brewed to celebrate the opening of our Boston Brewery. Like Samuel Adams Boston Lager®, it was an old family recipe that was rescued by Jim Koch from his father’s attic. Samuel Adams® Boston Ale, a Stock Ale, has a complex, caramel malt character balanced with distinct spicy and herbal hop notes. Our proprietary ale yeast imparts a variety of fruit and ester notes in both the nose and flavor which are indicative of the style. Stock Ale, one of the few classic beer styles to have originated in the United States, has a strong New England heritage. The style draws its name from the cool "stock cellars" in which it was aged. This technique imparted a smoothness and body which became the hallmark of this style. Keeping with the Stock Ale style, Samuel Adams® Boston Ale is fermented at cooler almost lager like temperatures and conditioned much longer than most ales. It also is Krausened and dry hopped.

Not a good example of the style. Caramel malt is a little overpowering. Not too hoppy. The fact that they ferment at lager temps adds a lot to the flavor.

If there were a category of "just ok beers" this would be the feature number. Smell is rather bland, just like the taste and palate. This used to be my favorite beer. Times certainly have changed...

Single from total wine. Nutty caramel and toasty grain. Toffee baked bread. A little more full bodied than most you see in this style.

Bottle from Irma, Copenhagen DK, 5.1% ABV. Pours amber-brown with medium, persisting, creamy slightly off-white head. Aroma is sweet malts and ripe fruits, caramel. Bitterness confined to the head. A bit oily on the palate. Medium bitter finish.

Bottle, 355ml. Pours slight cloudy orange/red amber color with a dense, small off-white head. Aroma is caramel, syrup, sweetish malt, butterscotch and bread. Medium-high sweet syrupy caramel beginning, which balanced the semi-bitter dry flavour fine. Yeasty easters along. Light-medium bodied, creamy, sticky texture with average carbonation. Very close to become too sugary for my style, but not at all bad.

Caramelly sweet malty taste with some fruity notes. Taste is caramel malts with syrupy notes, not that sweet though, also coupled with a decent bitterness. Okay beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Wischylini (125) - Grimstad, NORWAY - JUL 2, 2014
Pours a clear amber, with a decent head that quickly collapses. The aromas are butterscotch, bread, malt, and some fruits. The taste is quite sweet, and low on the bittering hops, which makes for a beer that’s easy to drink. The aftertaste is fairly long. The mouthfeel is thin and the beer is moderately carbonated.
