Commercial Description:
Samuel Adams Boston Lager® is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoction mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® also uses only the finest of ingredients including two row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted. The Noble hops varieties, Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes, which are present from the aroma, through the flavor, to the lingering smooth finish. We take great pride in the Noble hops used in our beers. They are hand selected by Jim Koch and our other brewers from the world's oldest hops growing area. Among the world's most expensive, they cost twenty times as much as other hops.

Nothing wrong with this, despite how common it is. Pours a light brown with smallish head. Features a medium-to-light body with a nice crisp flavor. Some fruity hops, lots of malt and earthiness give it a distinct blend of flavors. I like to sip on this on more simple nights out.

Sure, it’ll do, but like most sam adams products it has a cardboardy quality to it. Body’s ok, but flavor’s not great. If I can get on my soapbox here, I think they brew too many beers that ultimately taste the same (and that long commercial description is so full of itself--yes, the beer’s drinkable but don’t tell me how expensive your hop varieties are. It’s like the commercials where we learn that Sam Adams puts a "pound more hops" in their beers--well, maybe that’s good and maybe not. Doesn’t it depend on the beer someone’s brewing in the first place? OK, I’m done now. Have I said it’s ok yet?)

Better on tap. Fuller aroma with more pronounced hops. Lacey head with great amber color. A little metallic in the finish, but not unpleasant.

Draught. Pours copper, decent head that last too terribly long. Aroma is faint, mainly sweet malt. Taste is sweet caramel malt up front, with spicy pine hops coming out fairly prominently on the finish, a bit earthy. Hops actually linger a bit on the palate for a dry finish. Palate is moderately carbonated, light to medium body. Very different from the bottled version I’ve had before - hops come out much more clearly in this one.

Slightly redish pour with uber head that fadded to a frothy skimming. Strong malty scent, mixed with nuts and something ... soapy? (Yes I was using a clean glass with no soap residue). Rather nice taste. Nuts, malts and a touch of spice, way better then I expected from something so easily found.
