Samuel Adams Boston Lager® is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoction mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® also uses only the finest of ingredients including two row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted. The Noble hops varieties, Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes, which are present from the aroma, through the flavor, to the lingering smooth finish. We take great pride in the Noble hops used in our beers. They are hand selected by Jim Koch and our other brewers from the world’s oldest hops growing area. Among the world’s most expensive, they cost twenty times as much as other hops.

Smell: very malty, caramel, pleasant hops. Taste: relatively thick mouthfeel (compared to the avg lager), creamy carbonation, malty sweet. Finish: light bitterness, hint of dry smoke. (tasted 06/10/16, can bb Sep 2016)

Bottle - Clear light amber colour, medium off-white head with fair retention. Fruity hop nose with some malty sweet scent. Taste is rich malty with fruity notes, decent citrussy hop bitterness with some peach, apple and caramel tones. Medium body, moderate carbonation, slick texture, fruity finish with ligering hop bitterness. Its a good beer but its far from the greatness of a really good traditional european lager. As a european i must say, that this beer is a total misconception of the (original) style. But as an american vienna lager, is really great.

A solid lager definitely. However, it is really not noteworthy and would not be an order I’d make if it wasn’t included in variety packs.

2015 BJCP Category: 7A Vienna Lager

AROMA: Fairly intense malt aroma; sweet caramel notes. Some floral/spicy hops. Clean lager character. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Deep amber/slightly reddish copper. Crystal clarity with CO2 always present. Fairly large, white, frothy persistent head. 3/3

FLAVOR: Soft malt presence, but quite flavorful. Caramel/toffee flavors without becoming cloying. Strong hop presence with floral and spicy notes. Bitter, but restrained. Perfectly balanced. 17/20

MOUTHFEEL: Body is fairly strong for 4.9% ABV. Medium sized, crisp; clean dry aftertaste. 5/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: To-spec in pretty much every way. Not sure why BJCP doesn’t have this listed as a commercial example of the style. 9/10

Ahhh, one of the old favorites that has been pushed to the back due to the craft beer revolution. From a can at Citizen’s Bank Park, home of the Phillies. Poured into a plastic cup. Good strong white head that sticks around forever. Nice aroma of figs and some molasses. Mouthfeel was heavier that I remember, but real solid. Taste is kind of one dimensional. And I was really looking for something as hard as I could. Malt flavor but not much else. and it was slightly sharp and abrasive. Still a good, solid beer that I’m happy to drink.
