COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Samuel Adams Boston Lager® is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoction mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® also uses only the finest of ingredients including two row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted. The Noble hops varieties, Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes, which are present from the aroma, through the flavor, to the lingering smooth finish. We take great pride in the Noble hops used in our beers. They are hand selected by Jim Koch and our other brewers from the world’s oldest hops growing area. Among the world’s most expensive, they cost twenty times as much as other hops.

Initially I wasnt impressed, but its easy to drink. The finnish has this flavor of coffee or chocolate which is probably the best part. Initial flavor was kind of bland....very fizzy and bubbly feel and swallow.

a nice hoppy lager, very much in the european pilsner tradition. very easy to find for a "drinkable beer" good distribution earns them extra points

Hoppy aroma. Clean slightly malty, slightly bitter taste. This is a good lager that resembles an ale in taste.

These guys get points for having raised consciousness about microbrewing, but their flagship lager isn’t their best brew.

UPDATED: DEC 4, 2010 I cannot help comparing every lager I drink to Sam Adams. It was the first ’real’ beer I tried. Always a great tap beer. Suffers more than most from the bottle. Spicy hop flavor. Nice noble twang in the spicy fade. Good food pairing beer as it works with just about everything.

I remember having only small sips of sam adams and basically spitting it out all over the place because of the soapy water flavour, but last night a good buddy of mine got me one at a blues bar in Chicago. Knowing that spitting wasn’t an option, I braced for my first swig. . .and was pleasantly surprised. There was a refreshing hoppy flavour that I wasn’t expecting. Though it wasn’t the greatest beer I have ever had, it was loads better than what I was bracing myself for.

This lager comes up just a little short all the way around. It is good but not great in all catergories. I prefer the Boston Ale.
