COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Samuel Adams Boston Lager® is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoction mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® also uses only the finest of ingredients including two row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted. The Noble hops varieties, Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes, which are present from the aroma, through the flavor, to the lingering smooth finish. We take great pride in the Noble hops used in our beers. They are hand selected by Jim Koch and our other brewers from the world’s oldest hops growing area. Among the world’s most expensive, they cost twenty times as much as other hops.

UPDATED: JAN 8, 2004 Boston Brewing Company isnt given enough credit. they make slightly above average beers but are able to market them everywhere. Not the best beers, but certainly for the quantity they brew, they do a damn good job. I used to like this beer alot more, but the more I drink it, the more ho-hum it gets. This one is pretty basic, nothin special, good clean lager, especially good on tap. Rerate late 2003. The last five or six times I've had this stuff, it has been awful. Watery, bittersweet and very unexciting. Tastes like an average American Dark at best. No crispness at all. Going to hell in a bucket. Koch should get off his rich ass and make this stuff good again, but that would eat up profit. . .

Orangish color. Malt smell, with a light malt taste. Found it somewhat unpleasant.

Drinkable. Slightly grainy. Finishes dry. Almost tastes like a Cali Common.

The middy beer of choice for the upper-lower middle class types.

Always a good choice when dining out and the choices are limited to Bud, Bud Light, etc. Easy to drink with a little bit of a kick to it.

UPDATED: MAR 24, 2004 I was quite suprised to see an (imported) american beer in my local supermarket - so I bought it. It was darker and had more body than i expected - perhaps a bit fruity? Would try again.

Tastes a lot like Bass to me. Leaning to the hoppy side. I thought we declared independence to get away from England. Sam, Sam, Sam...

Best by 09-(presumably)03. What is it about this stuff? An incredibly schizophrenic juxtaposition of what may be Cascade and Saaz hops in a lager? Bland anoymous malts. Whatever the intent, this stuff always makes me pucker and I seldom have another.
