Samuel Adams Boston Lager® is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoction mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® also uses only the finest of ingredients including two row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted. The Noble hops varieties, Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes, which are present from the aroma, through the flavor, to the lingering smooth finish. We take great pride in the Noble hops used in our beers. They are hand selected by Jim Koch and our other brewers from the world’s oldest hops growing area. Among the world’s most expensive, they cost twenty times as much as other hops.

Absolutely, without a doubt, my favorite beer. This is the lager all lagers should strive to be.

UPDATED: JUN 3, 2015 No matter how many years later and all the new craft beers Sam Adams Boston lager always tastes good. Excellent balance, session able, great alone or with food. Always good on tap a widely available go to beer.

An amber unfiltered lager with high white head. Aroma is bisquit, malty, yeasty. Taste is bitter and light sweet.

Samuel Adams Boston Lager is quite possibly the best lager that I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. It is characterized by a bold taste that overwhelms the senses and leaves a subtley sweet aftertaste, which leaves the drinker yearning for more. Boston Lager is the perfect drink for almost any party, at the bar or domestic get togethers.

Soft snow-white inch-thick head in a lager glass; beatuiful Brussels lace on the tracings....body shifts in light from brown-orange to orange-yellow--affecting...for a lager, quite hoppy...the balance is attractive...full-bodied and effervescent body...outstanding mouthfeel holds the tongue and lays the flavor on...best compliment to a lager: you could down a 12-pack easily (in any month or season), but the taste makes you slow down in respect...I’ve had this at parties too many times IN A BOTTLE, which sucked much of my ambition to drink it; in a glass, however, as a session beer, MUCH different--and my brother Jer tells me in the specially engineered glass Sam Adams sells, the bouquet and experience are multiplied exponentially...tough to believe after half a glass. And I NEVER call out others’ tastes, but after looking at the average rating on this site, I cannot imagine what other beer drinkers are looking for...I apologize to Mr. Koch and all his staff. Beautiful job, gentlemen.

UPDATED: AUG 28, 2004 Outstanding beer! Great floral aroma and taste. Delicious looking orange color. However, this is a heavy beer and I can only drink a few of them before I start feeling queasy.

One of the most underappreciated beers out there. This bottled version pours an autumn gold color, very deep gold. Impressive white head that retains well. Aroma is on the floral hoppy side, but it doesn’t suggest that the beer is for hopheads, nor does it scare away the hop-newbies. This beer is about balance, and the aroma achieves this admirably. The hoppiness has a pleasant steel-y metallic aroma, along with fresh bread notes in the mix, maybe even biscuits. On a hot day this is one of the most appetizing beers I reach for. On the palate this beer welcomes you warmly with that vienna style maltiness, light caramel, but wait, the hops assert themselves to compliment the malty character... leaving you to focus on the oily hops, but then there’s the malt again... and so on. I detect a citrusy character as well, but more floral and pleasant metallic flavors. Medium to full bodied Vienna style lager. Good body, but still refreshing and drinkable. The best of both worlds. This is a beer you can savor and contemplate, but also enjoy regularly with good availability. This is probably the best domestic craft beer in the vienna lager category, hands down. Beer Snobs, please set aside your elitism and look at this beer for what it is, despite its near "macro" status today.

I absolutely love this beer. Maybe it is nostalgia more than anything, the good times that went along with it, but it doesn’t matter to me. The taste reminds me of the smell of helmlock. I highly recommend.
