The taste is less flavorful than expected but still has a malty tones with hints of hops at the back of the throat. GMUcrew7 (360), Mason, Ohio, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Jul 11, 2008 Pours completely transparent brown with a tan head. Nice malty aroma with a heavy caramel backing. Flavor is a little more of a complex malt variety with some nuts and a pretty decent hop balance. Has a watery cheap beer palate that detracts from the beer. carruthm (1122), Seattle, Washington, USA

Reddish tinge, small head, expected nuts and caramel nose, but like many SA beers, too watery of a finish. Oakes (8080), gone rambling, Vietnam

It was a traditional brown ale flavor, but not too rich or filiing like a Newcastle; however, unlike Newcastley, I could put down more than a few of these in an evening. hoplover (166), Corpus Christi, Texas, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 7, 2008 If I’m in the mood for a traditional ale, this is the one I go to. This Brown Ale has one of the best malt character I’ve had. I tast hints of caramel and a little nuttiness, kinda like pecans maybe? Just the right amount of hops to give the beer more complexity. No harshness from the Brown One, just smooooth sailing. It appears to have a deep dark brown sugar color with a creamy tan head that’s faithful to hang with till the shows over and it’s time for another one.
