Head sits at about a finger and dies down to a thin film. Aromas are earthy with a little bit of sourness. Flavor is much the same as aroma... sourness is a little heavier than expected and earthy (wet soil) flavor is nice and there is a hint of sweet and roasted malt in the background. Nota lot of complexity, but pleasant enough. anthlovesbeer (67), north grafton, Massachusetts, USA

Once again, Sam Adams provides an ale that is a unique twist on a classic style. A light caramel and nutty taste builds with each sip. Very well done! mountainforest (111), Edinburgh, Scotland

Heavy but drinkable by almost anyone at the party. Look forward to drinking this again upon my return to the States. DrHomolka (728), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 13, 2008 12oz. Pours dark chestnut with a small off-white head that quickly drops to just a film. Aroma is pretty typical Brown Ale. Malty, sweet, beery, not really much else. Taste is smooth, watery, with a touch of a vomity undertone which I noticed a lot of Browns have. I am a fan of this style compared to most people but this one isn’t really anything special. SoLan (1411), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 12, 2008 Brown. Small tan head. Flavor and aroma of toasty malt, caramel, good-n-plenty, nuts, and dark bread. Subtle hop bitterness on the end. Medium body, balanced carbonation. Decent, sessionable brown ale. badlizard (2338), Berkeley, California, USA

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Apr 8, 2008 Updated: Sep 9, 2008Finally purchased a SA mix pack that DIDN’T include the SA light. This was in there instead. Certainly an improvement. Pours a dark brown color with moderate head and lacing. Sweet sugary vanilla aroma with hints of malt. Not as sweet tasting as some other Brown Ale’s but there’s something missing here. It’s got that slightly malty, brown sugary taste to it but the mouthfeel is quite weak. A bland finish and aftertaste leaves me wanting a little more. Still, I can’t complain, it’s better than the Light and I got to try a new beer.
