Commercial Description:
The Brown Ale is a traditional beer related to the first beers ever brewed commercially. Brewed with an interesting blend of malts, including pale two-row Harrington, Metcalfe, and Maris Otter malt, Caramel, Munich, and roasted Carafa malts, the Brown Ale shines with a deep mahogany luster. The malt flavor is complex and deep as well, with notes of biscuit, nut, and caramel. With moderate hop bitterness, a deep malt body, and a fruity ale fermentation character, the Samuel Adams Brown Ale satisfies the soul and doesn’t overwhelm the tongue.

This brew is very similair to Sam Adam’s Black Lager, but mellowed down some. This is a toasty ale, with a heavy body and distinguished flavor. Not terribly hoppy, but just enough to give it a good, complex flavor. The malts provide a great, smooth texture and fill out the tones of chocolate, spices, and cream. A very good brew that left me surprised, and wanting more!

Dark amber color, with a beige head, toasty malt, with a biscuity dough accent, nutty, caramel note, with a sweet toffeish aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a malty grainy character, with a hint of nutmeg spiciness, toffee, caramel accents, mild flowery note, nutty chestnut, a bit fruity, from sultana raisins and dates, leading towards a malty fruity , with an almondy bitterneess finish.

Light brown color and thick head entice. There is a sweet malty aroma. The taste is less flavorful than expected but still has a malty tones with hints of hops at the back of the throat.

Disappointing, considering that I would say most Sam Adam’s ales and lagers are above average. Nothing struck me as all that special. Mundane flavor, light head. Forgettable, I suppose.

12oz. Bottle Sam Adam’s brown poured a clear mahogany with bright ruby highlights when held to the light. A small white head formed but quickly diminished to just a tiny little coating with some soapy bubbles. Smelled of toasted malts and nuts. There’s another smell I’m not to pleased with but can’t put my finger on. It’s almost sickeningly sweet. Tastes average. There’s roasted malt with a coffee bitterness. This is followed by a touch of nuttiness. The nuttiness smoothes this beer out at the end and, in my opinion, is the best part of this beer. Mouthfeel is on the watery side. A little carbonation but not much. Drinkability is ok. I could drink these easy enough but I wouldn’t want to. There are a lot of superior browns out there. 10/14/06

big tan head that soon fades to minimal; a bit o’ lace, light carbonation. Nice brownish red. A little more bitter than a prototypical brown. a bit soft in the mouth. just ok. this is from a bottle I brought home from Bodega downtown La Crosse.
