Sweet caramel flavor, some light toffee and some dark malt. andyhite (290), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Oct 29, 2006 the aroma is fresh with an overabundance of vanilla nut blended with toffee and even hints of bananas. there’s also an earthiness that arises out of the nose. appearance? it’s a brown ale. if thick brown was a color, i believe sam adams would own it. unfortunately, the malts outweigh the hops, but each are noticable in their own rite. i can’t recall the specific hops that sam adams use for this ale, but it’s similar to the black lager in that they both have an odd spiciness that i can’t quite place. overall, it’s an avg brown ale, nothing spectacular. nonetheless i would recommend it to the nut brown fans out there. brauen (25), Crown Point, Indiana, USA Oct 24, 2006 Very malty and smooth. pours brown with a tan head. Very full beer. You can taste the pale and roasted malts. Not too bitter. Smells great. chadje (129), Pasadena, California, USA Oct 20, 2006 A decent tasting brown ale without the harsh aftertaste of some others. Similar in taste to Newcastle. markas101 (541), Fargo, North Dakota, USA Oct 18, 2006 33 cl bottle, Fargo. Sweet malty aroma, caramel and a slightly sour hint. Smooth malty flavour, slightly bitter, finishes well. yalnikim (776), Wellington, New Zealand Oct 18, 2006 Tasted 18/10/2006. 12oz bottle from BrewNZ.
Dark brown, yellowy tan head. Sweet cereal on the nose, reminiscent of granola I’m told. Slightly toasty. Rich malty notes that smell more Bock-ish than brown ale, though there are nutty and vinous note that are certainly reminiscent of hat famous old northern brown. Bittersweet in the mouth, quite simple after that complex nose. Smooth bitterness, well balanced, with little hop flavour. Slight carbonic bite and fairly short. Pretty good.
