COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sam Adams has just released 4 beer in the brewery’s new Small Batch Series, and aren’t stopping there. Cinder Bock looks to join the crew next year. Cinder is billed as a “rauchbock” or smoke bock. Unusual and playful this half-breed brew begins with a rush of smoky, almost savory, aromas and flavors. The distinctive campfire smokiness of a rauchbier lingers and beings to reveal the rich and velvety malt smoothness of a double bock with a notes of toffee and caramel. This roguish brew transforms from its bold start to a hearty and satisfying finish.

Bottle. Pours deep, dark amber with thick beige head. Aroma is filled with Smokey sweet toasty maltiness. Flavor is much the same with a great alcohol spice cutting through the sweet malt. Heavy mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Overall, very solid brew!

Tallahassee, Fl - Market Square Liquors - 22 oz bomber. Very dark copper pour with a frothy off-white head that leaves lots of thick lacing. Aroma of smoked meat and a freshly opened pack of band-aids. Flavor is fresh and chewy. Pick up some canned smoked fish with a date and raisin back end. Smoke flavor sits well and complements the sweet bock flavor rather than overwhelming it. Mouthfeel is sweet and sticky. Well done.

Clear amber with nice dense head. Smoky yeasty aroma with some alcohol. Smoky very sweet caramel and fruit woody ashy with slightly medicinal alcoholic bitter finish. Sticky cloying. Pretty much a mess. They might want to try the Fort Collins version.

(22 oz. from Bootleggers) Rusty-red brown-amber with a very tall khaki head that recedes to a thick lasting cap in my willibecher. Aroma of sweet smoke and caramel. Mouthfeel full and beefy. Lots of thick, broken lacing. Tastes pretty much like the aroma - smoke and sweet caramel. Very nice - not as intense or perfect as a Schlenkerla Urbock, say, but a very tasty and balanced rauchbier I hope SA keeps around.

22OZ bottle - pours deep amber with tan head and light lacing. Nose is smoky, caramel and coffee. Flavor adds alcohol, peat, and candy to the experience. Taste is subdued sweet and a little bitter. When I saw that this was a smoked beer, I feared the worst, but I am relieved that it is more like a Doppelbock. Interesting beer and I love it when I find a beer by SA that isn’t hoppy as goat balls! dry finish and sticky texture - burpy.

Bottle from Beverages 4 Less in Santee, CA. Pours ruddy copper with a 3 finger creamy beige head which does some ring lacing. Aroma is smoke. Not harsh, but very present. Full bodied. Flavor is smoke, and it’s fairly strong. There’s some treacle. It’s malty. The smoke sort of comes and goes. Strong, but not among the strongest. No heat. There are some hop/herb flavors, but they at best support the smokiness. Well done, and compares very well with the German rauch beers. Arguably among the best of American smoked ales. With time the smoke lets loose of the taste buds and nose a bit (fatigue!) and the rich malty bock can be sensed.

dmac (3747) - Toms River, New Jersey, USA - MAR 3, 2012
22 oz bomber from Spirits Toms River. Poured a very good looking super deep burnt orange/brown body under a large full foamy light beige head. Aroma is a cross between smoked meat and campfire smoke a first and then some sweet notes sneak in like maple hickory smoke. Full syrupy body that is chewy with average to stronger carbonation and a lingering aftertaste. Flavor is much like the aroma with loads of smoked meat, dry maple syrup on toast, brown bread, camp fire smoke. Good stuff.

Pours a very nice dark amber with a thick creamy off-white head that dissipates into a nice lace that remains throughout. Aroma was the weakest point to me. Off the pour it has a nice smoked aroma with hints of malt and alcohol, but the smokey aroma fades very quickly leaving you with a malty alcohol nose for the majority of the beverage. Taste is pretty nice. The smokiness is there but not the star which was somewhat disappointing. Malts and hops are balanced nicely but overshadowed by an alcohol burn. Heavy bodied and a little thick and syrupy which makes the sweetness feel a little overwhelming. Which it was a little less syrupy so it was an easier beer to drink. Good carbonation. Overall and interesting but flawed beer.
