Sam Adams has just released 4 beer in the brewery’s new Small Batch Series, and aren’t stopping there. Cinder Bock looks to join the crew next year. Cinder is billed as a “rauchbock” or smoke bock. Unusual and playful this half-breed brew begins with a rush of smoky, almost savory, aromas and flavors. The distinctive campfire smokiness of a rauchbier lingers and beings to reveal the rich and velvety malt smoothness of a double bock with a notes of toffee and caramel. This roguish brew transforms from its bold start to a hearty and satisfying finish.

Nice medium dark color, with a thick creamy head that disapated to a nice lace. Aroma is malty with a hint of smoke. The smoke is stronger in the taste but not overly. Good malt and hop balance. Definitely worth trying.

650 ml bottle from bev4less. Pours a translucent amber-brown color with a medium beige head that has good retention. The aroma is mild with sweet roasted malts and a trace of smoke. The flavor is a bit better than the nose with smoke making a soft entrance amid layers of rich sweet malts. The palate is full and creamy with medium carbonation. Finishes long with lingering sweet malts. Overall: Its a good beer, but the smoke is too weak. I was really in the mood for something like a schlenkerla, so I was disappointed.

This has a bit of smoke in the aroma. Looks fine. Flavor has some definite smoke. This is pretty tasty right up front. However, I had to downgrade this at the end because it’s super sweet.

Poured into a snifter. Batch #1. 5.0 A: Clear deep amber color. Two and a half fingers of super creamy off-white/beige head. Retention is very good considering the ABV and glass covering lacing is left. 4.5 S: The smoke runs deep in this one and I love it. Campfire and smoked pork/bacon are abundant. Underneath, this is quite clean with caramel and toffee sweetness. This isn’t overly sweet like a lot of bocks. Good balance between the smoke and the beer. 3.0 T: The smoke is a little lighter in the taste than in the nose. Unfortunately the booze pokes through and is formitable. Caramel and toffee are there again, but in less quantity than I would have guessed. Still clean, but a little bready. Still tasty, but not as well integrated as the nose. 3.5 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Reasonably creamy. Smooth enough with a light warming on finish. 3.5 D: Really good looker and smeller. After that, it’s still a decent beer. Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark caramel-brown color with a huge creamy orange-tan head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was sweet caramel, molasses, and a strong bock presence but no noticeable smoke. The flavor was faint hickory with sour caramel with a solid bock presence and faint dark fruits. The finish was long and tangy bock with faint hickory. Medium body. The alcohol was well hidden. Decent.
