3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
22 oz. bottle- Pours dark ruby red with a two to three off white cream colored head that is reducing. The aroma is similar to a rauchbier, meaty, BBQ, malty, mildly spicy. The taste is caramel, toffee, meaty, alcohol burn, smoked barbeque, very smooth. Body and carbonation is medium. Interesting beer, better than the Dark Depths I think.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
The beer pours a deep red color with a tan head. The aroma is definitely that of a smoked beer. I get a ton of meaty BBQ-like smoke, as well as a little bit of roasted malt. The flavor follows suit. There are a lot of burnt malts, as well as as good dose of smoke and a little bit of sweetness from the toffee or caramel malt. Still, this beer is all about the smoke and it definitely delivers on that front. I don’t get any alcohol, which is surprising since the beer is nearly 10 percent. Medium, creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tallahassee, Fl - Market Square Liquors - 22 oz bomber. Very dark copper pour with a frothy off-white head that leaves lots of thick lacing. Aroma of smoked meat and a freshly opened pack of band-aids. Flavor is fresh and chewy. Pick up some canned smoked fish with a date and raisin back end. Smoke flavor sits well and complements the sweet bock flavor rather than overwhelming it. Mouthfeel is sweet and sticky. Well done.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Clear amber with nice dense head. Smoky yeasty aroma with some alcohol. Smoky very sweet caramel and fruit woody ashy with slightly medicinal alcoholic bitter finish. Sticky cloying. Pretty much a mess. They might want to try the Fort Collins version.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
(22 oz. from Bootleggers) Rusty-red brown-amber with a very tall khaki head that recedes to a thick lasting cap in my willibecher. Aroma of sweet smoke and caramel. Mouthfeel full and beefy. Lots of thick, broken lacing. Tastes pretty much like the aroma - smoke and sweet caramel. Very nice - not as intense or perfect as a Schlenkerla Urbock, say, but a very tasty and balanced rauchbier I hope SA keeps around.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
22OZ bottle - pours deep amber with tan head and light lacing. Nose is smoky, caramel and coffee. Flavor adds alcohol, peat, and candy to the experience. Taste is subdued sweet and a little bitter. When I saw that this was a smoked beer, I feared the worst, but I am relieved that it is more like a Doppelbock. Interesting beer and I love it when I find a beer by SA that isn’t hoppy as goat balls! dry finish and sticky texture - burpy.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Beverages 4 Less in Santee, CA. Pours ruddy copper with a 3 finger creamy beige head which does some ring lacing. Aroma is smoke. Not harsh, but very present. Full bodied. Flavor is smoke, and it’s fairly strong. There’s some treacle. It’s malty. The smoke sort of comes and goes. Strong, but not among the strongest. No heat. There are some hop/herb flavors, but they at best support the smokiness. Well done, and compares very well with the German rauch beers. Arguably among the best of American smoked ales. With time the smoke lets loose of the taste buds and nose a bit (fatigue!) and the rich malty bock can be sensed.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
22 oz bomber from Spirits Toms River. Poured a very good looking super deep burnt orange/brown body under a large full foamy light beige head. Aroma is a cross between smoked meat and campfire smoke a first and then some sweet notes sneak in like maple hickory smoke. Full syrupy body that is chewy with average to stronger carbonation and a lingering aftertaste. Flavor is much like the aroma with loads of smoked meat, dry maple syrup on toast, brown bread, camp fire smoke. Good stuff.
