2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours with a lightly effervescent, clear mahogany body under a large, foamy, long-lasting head. Aromas start more "musty" than smoked at first, with an apparent grassiness and some floral notes. This later opens up to ashen, roasted malts with a touch of sweet caramel and some strong whiffs of alcohol. Palate is thick and cloying, sugars are forward. There is a definite smoked malt presence in the flavor, but with the overt sweetness and hefty ABV the beer stings of a Mocne or a "Strong Euro Dark". Might be more acceptable if touted as a "dopplebock with smoked malt"... I adore Rauchbiers and this fails as such. I winced more than I smiled. ~~~~~~ Pint bottle from Kenwood Liquors, Oak Lawn, IL.

Smoky aroma but not overdone, I have never particularly liked beers or whiskys for that matter that smell like a house fire. Balanced with kind of a caramel aroma with a little bit of alcohol bite to it. Deep amber/caramel color with a relatively fizzy looking head, tasted less carbonated than it looked, perhaps I just had a crappy pour into my glass. Head leaves behind lace as you drink. Smoky "savory" as described on the bottle with a decent bit of sweetness, a bit too sweet for my taste but not bad. Slightly oily and wine-like on the palate due to the almost 10% ABV. Pretty nice but not one I’d go to regularly I don’t think, just for personal taste.

Pours a light brown with an off white head that left some good armount of lacing. The aroma is smokey and some caramel. The taste is similar, somewhat bitter. I pick up some alcohol.

22oz bottle -
I had some mixed feelings about this beer. On one hand, I applaud Sam Adams for doing different styles of beer and pricing them on the affordable side. But sometimes making a beer style because you can, should be reeled in a bit because the end product isn’t quite spectacular, or above average even. I guess all things considered, it is above averag, but barely.
The aroma has some smokey character to it, light soy, some Coca-cola wit just a little floral note. Flavor carries the smokey character pretty easily, but it’s rather watered down. I can’t help comparing this smoked bock, with another smoked bock...one Aecht Schlenkerla’s Ur-bock and it’s not even in the same stratosphere. Not much else going on with this beer. It’s like all the character and complexity has been stripped down to some light smoke. While it’s not a bad beer, it could have been a smoked amber, or a smoked brown or some other vague style. Worth it once I thought, but not much else.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
nice mix of smoke and heat, in a full bodied, almost sticky bodied beer. smoke and maple-ey sweetness, more so than a traditional doppelbock for sure, but it works. aroma and taste similar, but there’s an extra kick o sweet right at the back of the mouth, then a nice smokey finish. I liked this, as i have all the Sam Adams 22’s so far, but it doesn’t stand out amongst those. If it remains in the area, I’d probably get again for a summer bbq. "

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Well done. Aroma of smoked malts and a little burnt sugar. The color was a murky dark caramel with an average head. Medium weight and good carbonation. Smoke flavor was natural and lasted throughout. Burnt caramelized sugar that linked the Rauchbier and Bock characteristics. Actually, blended well and a complex profile.

Poured from bomber into a strange glass
Appearance- Pours a lightly hazed light brown/copper color with a thick three finger cream colored head. The head has a great level of retention, slowly fading to leave a medium level of lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell- The smell is smoky and roasty with notes of sweetness. A roasted malt and lightly burnt aroma is mixed with smoke and nuts and a sweet smell of molasses and caramel.
Taste – The taste begins with a bready and roasted malt flavor. It initially has only a light caramel sweetness, but toward the middle and the end the caramel grows stronger in nature with it being joined by some brown sugar flavors as well. A smoke flavor starts out the taste quite strong only to fade in the middle of the taste and reemerge later at the end of the taste with greater intensity. With the increase in sweetness and smoke toward the end of the taste so too comes a light nutty flavor and a slight warming alcohol flavor. When all flavors are combined in the end, they leaves a pleasant warming toasty sweet flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel- The body of the beer is quite chewy and thick complimenting quite nicely all the roasted, smoke, and nut flavors of the brew. The carbonation level also suited most of the flavors quite nicely as it was on the lower side with it enhanced both the thickness of the body as well as created a more warming feel when combined with the alcohol flavors of the brew.
Overall – This is a rather enjoyable brew. It has a good blend of toast, smoke, sweet, nut and booze with a chewy and thick body that suits the flavors rather nicely.

It is like if Satan made a beer out of the burned blood of a goat. When you drink it your third eye opens a little bit and smoke billows out your mouth as your mind bakes a tiny bit. You can blow smoke rings after every sip.

bottle - This brew has a pleasant wood smoke aroma with caramel/toffee malt character. It’s very sweet tasting with caramel and smoke. Hops presence is minimal, even in the finish, with malt sweetness and smoke lingering in this full bodied brew. Very good.

While I’m not usually a fan of smoked beers, this one wasn’t too bad. Smoke and malt on the nose with just a little sweetness; follows onto the palate. Finishes with sweetness, toffee-like flavors.

Rated on 6-04-2012 (Bottle-Batch No. 1) This beer pours a medium sized semi-fizzy ivory head that mostly diminishes, transparent deep orange body, very fizzy, fast rising carbonation, and a fair amount of lacing adorns my glass. The aroma is lightly smokey, hops and caramel malt. The flavor is lightly smokey, hops and caramel malt. The mouthfeel is lively and this beer is light-medium bodied. This beer is not very smokey for the style. It is easy to drink and the ABV is well hidden. This is not one of my favorite beer styles but it is worth trying.
