Great thick head. Intense dark chocolate smell with a hint of coffee. Nice balance between the bitterness and creaminess. A thick, sweet stout.

Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, fair lacing,
mostly lasting. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty
(roasted grain, burnt, strong coffee, dark chocolate). Flavor is
moderately sweet, moderately bitter. Finish is moderately bitter,
lightly acidic, unclean. Light to medium body, watery (almost creamy)
texture, lively carbonation, moderately astringent. Good flavor balance
and nice aroma, but there’s an unpleasant vegetal/husky aftertaste and a
poor mouthfeel (very thin and quite astringent).

Very light aroma. Good body, smooth, quite strong coffee and roasted malt taste, somehow ’raw’. Palate with strong coffee character and a light sourness.

Bloody Velvet Jones! What a beer. Here I sit in Tennessee, having to shop for beer at Food Lion due to bizarre wet laws, and I stumble across a true gem. The aroma is a sirensong of vanilla, hops and pitchblack malt. I’m stuck in a motel with a plastic Krystal cup, so I have to evaluate the appearance from the cool label and the khaki head, but I assume it’s black as coal. The flavor is a bit peppery/spicey, coffee and cream, charred malt with a ruthlessly balanced hop/roast charge. The palate is substantial, but not perfect -- a little clinging and tart. This isn’t the grail, but Boston Beer again demonstrates that they’re no dunces at brewing.

Smeels like a hershey’s chocolate bar, and tastes wonderful. A great mix of chocolate hops and barley. Has a very European taste to it. Excellent beer.
