Another entry into Sam Adams Small Batch Series – Dark Depths. Depths is a IPA or a hoppy porter ( Need some clarification) brewed with a lager yeast for an interesting mesh of styles. Across the cold and brackish waters of the Baltic, the English Porter was transferred, from a mild ale to a dark and complex lager that confounds definition. Immersed in dark, roasted malts and a bold citrus hop character, these big and contrasting flavors are brought together with the smoothness of a lager for a brew that’s bold, mysterious, and full of flavor. Batch #1

solid black IPA, could use a little more intensity with the hops, but all in all a nice tasting beer, a bit fruity, nice malt balance, but again just missing a little bit of overall intensity for a black IPA, so its not top tier but almost there.

Draft @ redlight redlight. Piney hops on the Bose with hints of dark roasted malts. Pours black with a thick off white head. Hoppy upfront with dark fruit and some mild astringency. Not bad

Hopology #3. Aroma of toasted malt, oats and some floral contrast. Dark brown as opposed to black. ops come through more on the first sip, though it’s not any worse than the average IPA for bitterness. This beer also also some elements of the heavy Baltic-style porters from the Poles and Fins. Having tried a few black IPAs, I’ll say this is the least extreme yet. Nonetheless, it is heavy and not easily approachable .

Deep ruby to brown pour with thick creamy head. Nose is hoppy citrus. Taste is as described: a hoppy porter. Nothing is bad but nothing stands out either.

22oz. bottle. Aroma of roasty, darkly sweet malts and fruity, floral hop, featuring notes of cola, licorice, cocoa and toffee in the background. Clear deep, dark brown in color, with a foamy, lasting, light tan head that leaves gobs of lacing behind. Flavor profile is fairly smooth and well-integrated, certainly a rather laid back interpretation of the style, with a good balance of malt roast, mild sweetness, dark chocolate and coffee aspects, earthiness, dark fruity tones, flowery, gently citric hop and some mild to moderate bitterness appearing late. Very faint cherry, smoke and black licorice character lingering after the finish. Smooth, semi-dry and fairly thick on the palate, body is full. Really pretty interesting and tasty. Not your typical Black IPA either -- guessing that the lager yeast has a lot to do with that.

Nice foaming action on a dark amber body. Good hoppy notes in the mid finish, effervescent alcohol. Long, lingering mellowness. Good.

Sampled on 5/14/2012. This Black IPA pours a very dark black color from a 22oz bottle. Medium to large sized tan/beige foamy rocky head with good retention and sticky lacing. The aroma is caramel, fruity and sweet, chocolate and coffee, with some citrusy hops. A medium bodied black IPA. The malts are caramel, roasty, chocolate and coffee. The hops are citrusy and a touch grapefruity. Decent carbonation. There is a whole lot of variability of flavors in this beer style. Every thing for a hoppy porter/stout to a big IPA with dark malts falls into the Black IPA category. This one is more towards the porter side of things. Very drinkable and I am enjoying the interplay between the slightly sweet chocolate malts and the citrusy hops. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Pours dark amber color with small off white head. Mostly malty aroma with molasses and toffee notes. Flavor follows, with some molasses, maybe some licorice, and light citrus hops.

Bottle, poured a dark brown color, medium head. Citrus hop really sticks out in aroma with some pineapple grapefuit notes. Slight roasted malt notes also. Medium bitter, light sweetness. Medium body, slight thick and creamy. Nice roasted malt flavor along with some not no subtle citrus hop balance. Pretty good.
