Another entry into Sam Adams Small Batch Series – Dark Depths. Depths is a IPA or a hoppy porter ( Need some clarification) brewed with a lager yeast for an interesting mesh of styles. Across the cold and brackish waters of the Baltic, the English Porter was transferred, from a mild ale to a dark and complex lager that confounds definition. Immersed in dark, roasted malts and a bold citrus hop character, these big and contrasting flavors are brought together with the smoothness of a lager for a brew that’s bold, mysterious, and full of flavor. Batch #1

Too sweet and oily. Sam Adams is starting to become a parody of itself with all of these gimmicky beers. Indeed, the whole craft beer industry needs a good Saturday Night Live skit skewering the ridiculous mess the business has become.

22 oz bottle. Pours dark ruby red with a small foamy head that quickly fades. Aroma is faint but nice. Roasted malt, slightly burnt. Citrus and caramel also. Taste is mildly sweet and mildly bitter. Very roasty and burnt with lots of citrus hops and some spiciness too. A bit boring but not bad. Medium body, carbonation is a little foamy in the mouth. Overall, a decent beer but I won’t buy again. Many better black IPA’s.

22oz bottle. Pours a clear reddish brown color with a thick inch and a half of off white head. Aroma of sweet roasted malt, and a hint of pine. Taste is light sweet chocolate, roasted malt, pine, with a light bitter finish for an ipa.

Bottled. Dark brown pour with coppery highlights. Dense light tan head. Aroma is grassy hops and caramel maltiness. A little bit of cattiness in the hop aroma. Flavor is rich caramel, chocolate, and treacle toffee balanced by a delicate bitter hop finish. Balance is excellent between sweet and bitter. Little to no hint of alcohol though the beer is quite strong. Rich full mouthfeel. Medium-high level of carbonation. Bitter aftertaste without astringency. Rich, satisfying beer. The alcohol is well concealed in this extremely well balanced offering from Sam Adams. A roasty malt backbone with a nicely bitter hop balance. Excellent. ---Rated via Beer Buddy from my iPad.
