COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Another entry into Sam Adams Small Batch Series – Dark Depths. Depths is a IPA or a hoppy porter ( Need some clarification) brewed with a lager yeast for an interesting mesh of styles. Across the cold and brackish waters of the Baltic, the English Porter was transferred, from a mild ale to a dark and complex lager that confounds definition. Immersed in dark, roasted malts and a bold citrus hop character, these big and contrasting flavors are brought together with the smoothness of a lager for a brew that’s bold, mysterious, and full of flavor. Batch #1

From the bottle. Slightly metallic aroma from the yeast, looks good, some roast on the palette followed by some bitterness. it’s ok but not something I’d drink again.

Pours out almost black with a 2-finger head. Aroma is of light roast, caramel, some chocolate and light earthy hops. Taste is better than aroma, nice deep roasty notes, light chocolat, with a solid citrusy hop bitterness going on throughout. Well done.

A dark red beer with a thick tan head. The aroma is floral, pine, and fruity. The flavor is floral and fruity with sweet malt, a really good beer.

(Batch Number 1) Per the label, a Baltic IPA. This starts with a nice blend of roasted notes and hop notes. Pours a clear, dark, ruby red, with a huge tan head. This is one tasty beer, full roasted notes with a long lingering finish. The hops are not as predominant as I expected, just making a token experience. There’s a slick mouthfeel, and the alcohol is really well hidden. I will definitely be picking up more of this beer.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of roasted malt with a nice green hop note and a bit of grass. Flavor has roasted malts throughout with a bit of bitter chocolate and is backed by a nice fresh grass/pine hop note.

Bottle; poured acdark brown cOlor with a huge light brown head. Aroma of earth, cocoa, roasted malt and pine. Flavor had alot chocOlate and caramel; a touch of hops, but definitely more Baltic than ipa. Still a fairly tasty brew.

Friday night brew #2. Pours jet black with so e head on later pours. Nose of pine and cocoa. Tastes of roasted malts, hops, bitter dark chocolate, grapefrui, and cola. Nice offering.

Pours deep mahogany into a Sam glass. Soapy mocha head with medium retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Dark caramel and resin aromas. Thin upfront with sweet caramel turning thicker with charred resin before the lasting espresso finish.

650 ml. bottle. Pours a large, lasting, light beige head, with very heavy "sea foam" lacing, over a clear, brown (SRM 30) body.....nose is light coffee, touch of toffee/caramel, pine, citrus....taste is toffee/caramel, molasses, pine, citrus, finishing with a lingering bitterness with hints of sweetness.....mouth feel medium, carbonation adds a light spritz. I am unclear as to why they chose to mention the Baltic. This is a straight forward Black IPA, with the usual hop layers on top of a dark malt backbone. Baltic Porters have a very dominant malt bill with a lighter hop addition. This is a nice beer, with appropriate aroma and flavor, as well as complexity for the Black IPA style. BJCP 7/3/14/4/7
