Another entry into Sam Adams Small Batch Series – Dark Depths. Depths is a IPA or a hoppy porter ( Need some clarification) brewed with a lager yeast for an interesting mesh of styles. Across the cold and brackish waters of the Baltic, the English Porter was transferred, from a mild ale to a dark and complex lager that confounds definition. Immersed in dark, roasted malts and a bold citrus hop character, these big and contrasting flavors are brought together with the smoothness of a lager for a brew that’s bold, mysterious, and full of flavor. Batch #1

Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of roasted malt with a nice green hop note and a bit of grass. Flavor has roasted malts throughout with a bit of bitter chocolate and is backed by a nice fresh grass/pine hop note.

Bottle; poured acdark brown cOlor with a huge light brown head. Aroma of earth, cocoa, roasted malt and pine. Flavor had alot chocOlate and caramel; a touch of hops, but definitely more Baltic than ipa. Still a fairly tasty brew.

Pours deep mahogany into a Sam glass. Soapy mocha head with medium retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Dark caramel and resin aromas. Thin upfront with sweet caramel turning thicker with charred resin before the lasting espresso finish.

650 ml. bottle. Pours a large, lasting, light beige head, with very heavy "sea foam" lacing, over a clear, brown (SRM 30) body.....nose is light coffee, touch of toffee/caramel, pine, citrus....taste is toffee/caramel, molasses, pine, citrus, finishing with a lingering bitterness with hints of sweetness.....mouth feel medium, carbonation adds a light spritz. I am unclear as to why they chose to mention the Baltic. This is a straight forward Black IPA, with the usual hop layers on top of a dark malt backbone. Baltic Porters have a very dominant malt bill with a lighter hop addition. This is a nice beer, with appropriate aroma and flavor, as well as complexity for the Black IPA style. BJCP 7/3/14/4/7

Pours a five finger khaki head that fades very slowly to leaving a good lace. Black color, no highlights. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Grapefruit nose and flavor is smooth caramel and grapefruit. Lingering grapefruit finish. $5.99 for a 22oz bottle from Julio’s Liquors Westborough, Ma.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Colonial Wine and Spirits, 3/7/12, Batch #1

Aroma: The nose is fairly hoppy with resiny and citrus notes, and a little bit of roasted malts
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a thick, foamy light beige head and lots of lace
Flavor: The taste is more roasty and earthy, the resin and citrus from the nose are much more subtle
Palate: The body of this one is medium, it feels a bit oily, with a carbonation that is average-to-lively
Overall Impression: This was a solid offering. It wasn’t a spectacular beer, but it was pretty enjoyable.

Pours turbid blackish rubyish mahogany with 2-finger well-retained khaki head. Nose is hoppy, but has a cacaoey and chocolatey presence, too, withy more resins and citrus as I sniff deeper to allow the maximum amount of olfactory neurons to participate in the sensory perception. The taste is crisp, very hoppy, a bit earthy, with cacao, dark malts, and some tangeriney notes late. Palate is complex, hefty, and keeps up the hop enslaught throughout.

22oz bottle - pours super dark ruby with massive beige head and decent lacing. Pine nose. Flavor is roasty, citrus, caramel and more citrus. Interesting taste: first the bitterness hits you, then some sweetness pervades, but ends bitter once again. Near dry finish, with long hoppy aftertaste. Thin texture, but sticky. I can hardly tell this is a porter taste-wise, but is visually convincing. Definitely a style of it’s own, though the hoppiness is exaggerated for my taste.

Bottle thanks to my favorite wigger. Deep brown/near black pour with some off-white head. Aromas of sweet grains, grapefruit, and roasted malt. Flavor is way too sweet and underwhelming.
