3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours black with plenty of red highlights and a fluffy beige head. Aroma of pepper, grass, lemon, and a slight roastiness. Flavor of pepper, lemon, black coffee, toast, and a bit of toffee. Bitterness is building already. Finishes kind of acidic with pine, lemon, black coffee, and there’s a lingering burnt and slightly ashy finish. Medium bodied, nice creamy mouthfeel and no noticeable heat. Decent beer, but I wish the replaced "IPA" with "Porter" on the label. Baltic porter = exciting, black IPA = ehhh.

Bottle. Rating #44. Dark, dark brown pour with a spotty tan head. Light roast and a bit of hoppiness with a touch of dark fruits. Nice flavor, mild bitterness with a touch of toast, nice mouthfeel and pretty smooth with a pleasant finish. (2201)

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Yet another in a long list of blah Black IPAs. +++ Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with an enormous creamy brown head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was gritty floral and fruity hops with light roasty dark malts underneath. The flavor was bitter anise, roasty malts and gritty floral hops. The finish was long roasty and floral. Fairly full bodied. Eh.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Has a fairly roasty hoppy aroma. Very opaque. Looks like an imperial stout with a lighter colored head. This is good. Plenty of hops with some strength/bite in the finish. A little funk at the very end.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Head is initially large, frothy/creamy, light brown, mostly lasting.
Body is dark brown to black.
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (chocolate syrup, roasted grain / coffee, nuts, caramel), lightly hoppy (apricot), with light notes of plastic and prunes.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter, slightly unclean.
Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic.
Rather docile in the nose, mainly malt and fruit, some plastic. Not as hoppy as most black IPAs. Turns a bit sour in the finish. Somewhat dirty, but not as bad a lot of this brewery’s products. Overall underwhelming, but it looks nice and the mouthfeel is pleasant.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured into a snifter. Batch #1.
4.0 A: Black color. A full three fingers of beige, creamy/frohty hybrid head. Retention is very good and moderate amounts of semi-regular lacing is left.
3.5 S: Earthy and herbal hops with perhaps a touch of citrus underneath. Moderate roast with semi-sweet chocolate, caramel, and molasses. Despite my reservations, the hops and dark malts work well together.
3.5 T: Like the nose, the hops and dark malts seem to live harmoniously, which is not the norm in my experience. Hops are mainly herbal and earthy with a touch of citrus. Mild bitterness. Malts offer molasses, some caramel, light chocolate, and a dusty graininess. Not bad here. Borderline 4.0.
4.0 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Reasonably creamy. Feels right given the flavor profile.
3.5 D: Easily one of the better hoppy dark beers out there. I think a lot of it has to do with the lack of super citrusy hops and a reasonable bitterness.
