COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Another entry into Sam Adams Small Batch Series – Dark Depths. Depths is a IPA or a hoppy porter ( Need some clarification) brewed with a lager yeast for an interesting mesh of styles. Across the cold and brackish waters of the Baltic, the English Porter was transferred, from a mild ale to a dark and complex lager that confounds definition. Immersed in dark, roasted malts and a bold citrus hop character, these big and contrasting flavors are brought together with the smoothness of a lager for a brew that’s bold, mysterious, and full of flavor. Batch #1

Poured into a snifter. Batch #1. 4.0 A: Black color. A full three fingers of beige, creamy/frohty hybrid head. Retention is very good and moderate amounts of semi-regular lacing is left. 3.5 S: Earthy and herbal hops with perhaps a touch of citrus underneath. Moderate roast with semi-sweet chocolate, caramel, and molasses. Despite my reservations, the hops and dark malts work well together. 3.5 T: Like the nose, the hops and dark malts seem to live harmoniously, which is not the norm in my experience. Hops are mainly herbal and earthy with a touch of citrus. Mild bitterness. Malts offer molasses, some caramel, light chocolate, and a dusty graininess. Not bad here. Borderline 4.0. 4.0 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Reasonably creamy. Feels right given the flavor profile. 3.5 D: Easily one of the better hoppy dark beers out there. I think a lot of it has to do with the lack of super citrusy hops and a reasonable bitterness. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 02-11-2012 08:04:33

Dark pour with a tan head. Aroma is roasted malt with fruity hops. Taste is roasted malt, citrus hops with a crisp taste. Very tasty-nice aftertaste. Nice lacing.

Hmmm, Interesting... Pours midnight black in the tasting glass with a thin sand colored soapy head. Flavor is flipped around compared to your typical Black IPA (and I did read the description). You get the hoppy citrus up front followed by a dark cocoa roasted malt after taste, which is backwards to a Black IPA. Slight floral soapy aroma like Irish Spring soap. Overall, a nice brew. I rather enjoy the differences compared to a Black IPA. Bravo Sam Adams!

Bottle from Spirits Toms River. Poured a great looking mostly black body with a large frothy dark beige head. Aroma is cola, toast, citrus rind and hint of chocolate. Fuller bodied with stronger carbonation, milkshake thick like fullness on this one. Flavor is a bit better than the aroma, lots of citrus rind, toast, chocolate, cola, grains. Solid beer, once again Sam steps up their game for the small batch series.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with Beige head. The aroma is a roasted malt and smoke. Medium mouthfeel with a sweet roasted malt. Easy to drink A very good black IPA from BBc.

2/25/12. Bomber during RBWG 2012. Brown pour, basically ruby under the light, under a small khaki head. Sweet, malty caramel aroma and a similarly slightly sweet, malty flavor but with a bigger hoppy kick. Eh.

UPDATED: FEB 3, 2013 Aroma is coffee, malts and an underpinning of hops. The flavor is coffee, malts, very clean throughout and a mildly hoppy finish.

Nice dark brown pour. Light head. Roasted malt, roasted nuts, hops in the nose. Flavor is hoppy but not overly bitter, some toffee and roasted nuts. Pretty good.

Another good one from this collection. A nice blend of floral, roasted malts and bread. A bit of a dry flavor at the end that I like. Just a tad thin.
