Tap. Pours deep, dark brown with thin, creamy off-white head; short retention and good lacing. Aroma is earthy hops, oak, dark fruit, and toasted malt. Flavor is light malt forward quickly followed by heavy hops and light esters; oak taste throughout with dry, hoppy finish. Medium body, carbonation, and warmth.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Really dark brown with a big frothy beige head. Lots of thick lacing. Aroma of, you guessed it, citrus, pine and roast, though itís a tad mild. Also some dark fruit in there somewhere though itís pretty quiet. It tastes like roasted malt, grapefruit, tree bark, dirt, and a little chocolate. Itís pretty bold actually, quite hoppy with substantial malts, and pretty well balanced, though itís not my favorite flavor combination. Medium bodied and well carbonated, this finishes crisp and bitter. Nicely done.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with small light tan head. Aroma is ok, piney and a touch citric, some roast and dark fruits. Flavor doesnt live up to the aromaís decent character. Bland and roasty, lots of caramel, just a bunch of bland sweetness, toasty and herbal. Medium body and a soft carbonation.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark mahogany bordering black with a large eggshell head. Aroma is very bright with candied citrus, toffee, and caramel. Similar flavor with the malts slightly overtaking the abundant hops. A little cocoa, pine, and grapefruit on every sip. Enjoyable but there are better in the style.

Bomber poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lasting tan head. Aromas of charcoal, roastiness, grapefruit and earthiness. Palate was medium bodied and crisp with a smooth finish. Flavors of roastiness, cocoa, earthiness and light grapefruit with a smooth bitter lingering roasty finish.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Havent had many Black IPAs before (Ive had Stone 15th and maybe two others). I really liked the hoppy aroma of this beer. The taste is very well balanced between the hops and dark malts. I like what SA is doing with these hybrid beers (combining two styles that one wouldnít normally associate with each other). I enjoyed the dark lager-like finish.

Bottle. Pours mostly black, slight dark amber hints. Half-finger off white head. Nose is a pretty expected blend of roasted malts, some coffee, and piney hops. A bit of chocolate on the tongue, with some citrus hops coming through as it warms. Grind a bit between your tongue and the roof of your mouth; the hops really explode. Good, not great.
