22oz bottle. Pours a clear reddish brown color with a thick inch and a half of off white head. Aroma of sweet roasted malt, and a hint of pine. Taste is light sweet chocolate, roasted malt, pine, with a light bitter finish for an ipa.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 allfreej (523) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - MAY 25, 2013
Bottled.
Dark brown pour with coppery highlights. Dense light tan head.
Aroma is grassy hops and caramel maltiness. A little bit of cattiness in the hop aroma.
Flavor is rich caramel, chocolate, and treacle toffee balanced by a delicate bitter hop finish. Balance is excellent between sweet and bitter. Little to no hint of alcohol though the beer is quite strong.
Rich full mouthfeel. Medium-high level of carbonation. Bitter aftertaste without astringency.
Rich, satisfying beer. The alcohol is well concealed in this extremely well balanced offering from Sam Adams. A roasty malt backbone with a nicely bitter hop balance. Excellent.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 wilderthanyou (676) - Guelph, CANADA - MAY 21, 2013
Pours a motor oil black with a thin, lightly sticky beige head. Aroma a bit citrus, but mainly dominated by a strange malty profile, coffee, chocolate, desk drawer, islay single malt. The flavour again has some citrus hop balance mingling throughout, but is mainly dominated by a mish mash of strange matly oddness, I can’t even really put my finger on a specific flavour, it’s good, glad I tryed it, but I probably wouldn’t buy this again.
1.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20 dzimm27 (133) - - MAY 6, 2013
Big malty aroma, medium-light brown color. Taste is malt, toast, and rather rough. Hops are muddy and not very peasant. Don’t really care for this.

Thanks to iNBe. I enjoyed the end result although I’m not sure how you would classify it, Black IPA works and doesn’t. Almost if a porter/dunkel/IPA all had a baby. But a rather mildly hopped IPA as the malt and roasted flavor subdue the hops. Nice minerally taste too. Serving: Bottle

Samuel Adams Dark Depths is a very dark, reddish brown beer with a thick, lumpy, beige head that decorates the glass with lacing. It smells dark, roasty and kind of smokey. There’s a lighter, semi-sweet malt aroma that almost smells like sorghum. There may be a hint of lemon peel. It’s smooth, soft and pretty full bodied. It has a pretty neat finish and leaves the teeth a little gritty. It’s a bit sweet, but less so than I’d expect from a Baltic porter. The bitterness balances it out well and hints at grass, wood and fruit. There are notes of prunes and coffee. There are a quite a few flavors going on. I’m a fan of both Baltic porters and IPAs, but this is a very strange mash up. That said, they pulled this off better than I would have imagined possible.
