Pours a dark bourbon and brown with a shorthand head. Sweet notes of coffee and a touch of licorice on the nose. The mouth feel is a little sticky and someone lively. Toffee, horehound hard Candy, and faint licorice are noted in the flavors.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Deep black color with a medium brownish head. Nose is very malty with dak fruits, dried prunes. Lots of caramel sweetness. Taste is the same with a good amount of coffee and dark chocolate that kicks in towards the end. Medium bitterness. Great balance between malty sweetness and roasted coffee beans!

"i was starting to buy into the small amount of negativity iíd heard about this beer...not that it would effect my opinion once iíd had a beer, but it made it so i wasnít as excited to try it. but damn, this was nice! different than most black ipas in that the dark side of the beer wasnít just dark malt but a definite strong/baltic porter. lots of chocolate and a hint of coffee and roast in the nose, with a decent dose of orange and grapefruit. the flavor really won me over though...a hint of black licorice and molasses in addition to what was present in the aroma. you say clash, i say unique. pretty dang smooth too. iíll get another while itís fresh."

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22 ounce bottle, Batch #2. No date information on the bottle from what I can tell, but I think itís got some age to it since the Sam Adams website says this isnít currently brewed. That and I bought the bomber for just $2.99 so it must have been on some kind of closeout. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours very dark brown with an inch tan head that stuck around a little while. Thereís also a lot of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like roasted malt, chocolate, citrusy hops, and pine hops. The taste is similar to the aroma, but thereís also some molasses, burnt/charred malt, dark fruit and earthiness noticeable. Thereís a lingering bitter finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium, itís slick and creamy with moderate carbonation. I thought this was pretty good. It ages well, next time Iíll make a point to try a fresher batch of this!

Transfer from BA review on 4-7-12 -
Poured from bomber into pint glass
Appearance- A nice dark brown color with a large billowy off white/brownish head. The head had some wonderful retention and gave way to a decent amount of lacing.
Smell Ė The smell was mainly of roasted malt with some aromas of coffee. Hints of some floral and earthy hops are also present and balance out some of the more malty aromas quite well.
Taste Ė The taste was of nice and roasty malt up front mixed with a light note of molasses and lactose sweetness. Toward the middle some nice more earthy hop flavors begin to come into the mouth. They complement the roasty taste quite well. At the very end a very roasty somewhat roasty flavor is left in the mouth and leaves a very nice aftertaste in the mouth.
Mouthfeel Ė A creamier body with a lighter level of carbonation allows the brew to really soak into the tongue and coat the mouth with a nice smooth feel.
Overall Ė A very solid hoppy dark brew. One very nice dark hoppier porter.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Well done. It comes across as a blend between a black IPA and a Baltic porter. Aroma was a mix of pine hoppiness and roasted malts. It poured very dark brown with an off-white head . It looked like a Porter. Palate was heavier than average with a fullness and average carbonation. The flavor started off with slight bitterness and moved to dark roasted malts. The finish was mainly malty with wood and coffee notes. Well blended.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Rated on 5-26-2012 (Bottle) This beer has a large frothy tan head with a lengthy retention, transparent reddish brown body, fizzy, fast rising carbonation, and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma is roasted malt, citrus hops and alcohol. The flavor is moderately bitter, citrus hops and roasted malt. The mouthfeel is carbonated and this beer is medium bodied. Overall, this beer has a good hoppy flavor along with a good roastyness. This beer is worth trying and a beer I would drink again.

Meh this one didnít really do it for me. Usually Sam Adams has some solid offerings, but this one just wasnít it. It has a weird sweet aroma and I couldnít find any hops at all. Just kind of messy in my opinion and as I drank it and it warmed up, it just became a sweet syrupy mess. There was no hop balance. I was excited to try this one but it kind of fell short.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Reviewed from notes.
The appearance was a dark brown body with a medium sized creamy tan head that died within about twenty seconds. There was some spotty lacing around the sides of the pint glass which seemed to create a small valley of dissipating head absorbing into the sides of the glass and leading to a spotty lace.
The smell had some burnt malts and rich dark fruits. Some chocolate came out, but it was very light.
The taste had the hops come in separately from the first taste but still distinctly in the background. For the most part, the taste was pretty much the same.
The palate it sat about a medium on the body with a slick and slightly creamy with a slight alcohol bite.
Overall, I could do this style, but am still pretty unfamiliar so I canít really say too much about it just yet and will have to try some other beers of this style. Until then, this was good and I would have it again, maybe side by side with another Baltic Porter to compare. In the meantime, Iíll read and research. However, I will say this is a real treat.
