COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Another entry into Sam Adams Small Batch Series – Dark Depths. Depths is a IPA or a hoppy porter ( Need some clarification) brewed with a lager yeast for an interesting mesh of styles. Across the cold and brackish waters of the Baltic, the English Porter was transferred, from a mild ale to a dark and complex lager that confounds definition. Immersed in dark, roasted malts and a bold citrus hop character, these big and contrasting flavors are brought together with the smoothness of a lager for a brew that’s bold, mysterious, and full of flavor. Batch #1

Bottle. Pours with a near black hued body and mediums sized brown head that leaves great lace and is very retentive. Aromas are of coffee, chocolatey roast, earthy, light caramel, flan, floral, flowery, lightly spicy. Flavors are medium bitter, sweet, lightly metallic, chocolate, resin, bready, dry and tin like. Bitter, roasty and bready. A bit lifeless. Medium to medium low carbonation. Medium to low body.

Big malty aroma, medium-light brown color. Taste is malt, toast, and rather rough. Hops are muddy and not very peasant. Don’t really care for this.

Thanks to iNBe. I enjoyed the end result although I’m not sure how you would classify it, Black IPA works and doesn’t. Almost if a porter/dunkel/IPA all had a baby. But a rather mildly hopped IPA as the malt and roasted flavor subdue the hops. Nice minerally taste too. Serving: Bottle

Samuel Adams Dark Depths is a very dark, reddish brown beer with a thick, lumpy, beige head that decorates the glass with lacing. It smells dark, roasty and kind of smokey. There’s a lighter, semi-sweet malt aroma that almost smells like sorghum. There may be a hint of lemon peel. It’s smooth, soft and pretty full bodied. It has a pretty neat finish and leaves the teeth a little gritty. It’s a bit sweet, but less so than I’d expect from a Baltic porter. The bitterness balances it out well and hints at grass, wood and fruit. There are notes of prunes and coffee. There are a quite a few flavors going on. I’m a fan of both Baltic porters and IPAs, but this is a very strange mash up. That said, they pulled this off better than I would have imagined possible.

This did not make me think of an IPA. It has a rich chocolate aroma. It pours a rich deep black. It has a rich chocolate flavor with malt and some hopps. It has a bitter, spicy finish. Not what I expected but good.

Dark pour with a frothy light tan head that leaves behind a nice lacing. Aroma is a nice mix of roasted malts typical of a porter and the hoppiness of an IPA. Really smooth flavor/body, starts with the citrus hops and then transitions back to a rich roasted malt flavor. Really good beer.

Pleasantly surprised. Not sure what to expect. Kind of a hybrid between an IPA and a Porter (though leans more heavily towards the latter). Definitely drink it again.

Bottle. Pours a dark, copper color. Smoked hops in the aroma with a hint of malt. Smooth. Dark taste with some hops. Some smoked brown sugar. Interesting IPA but I like it.

Deep amber, almost brown color with off-white head. Roasty-lightly-sweet porter character with a hop spike. Roasty-bready aroma.
