Brewing innovation is about asking "what if?". What if we gave an IPA a new identity and used some of our favorite West Coast hops, with their grapefruit, piney, & tropical fruit character, in a lager? The result is this boldly hoppy & and flavorful brew with the crisp smoothness of a lager. Cheers!

MALT VARIETIES Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend and Munich malt
HOP VARIETIES Zeus, Simcoe, Citra, Ahtanum, Cascade, Centennial, and Nelson Sauvin hops

This comes off as an IPA and is quite good despite the use of a lagering yeast. Its bright copper, relatively clear and has a small frothy head that’s a bit of a dirty white color. The aroma settles to a bland bitterness. The palate is full and cool and the the whole thing is pretty true to the style of a traditional India Pale in the sense it doesn’t suffocate the maltiness, yet maintains a nice bitter flavor. This could be a goto in the summer.

Bottle. Light amber clear with a thick white head. Pleasant citrus hop aroma. Hoppy palate, grapefruit and light pine, lighter malts but in good balance, finishing clean and bitter. Good.

A clear amber beer with a small white head. The aroma is nutty malt and light citrusy hops. The flavor is likewise balanced, making for an interesting and easy to drink brew.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2013 Bottle. A- Spices, herbs, grains. A- Copper color, clear liquid, white head. T- Heavy bitterness, medium malts, subtle fruit tones. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, long bitter finish. O- I was hoping this might be a change from an IPA but it seemed that to me there wasn’t much of a difference which was a disappointment for me.

Another nice SA entry. Copper pour with a frothy head. Aroma is pine to me. The taste is well balanced with malt and hops.

Amber mostly clear body, stable frothy lace. Clean hop profile, grapefruit. Fairly string bitterness actually, clean yeast, drinks quite well. More powerful taste than expected. (33cl bottle at JFK Airport bar)

12oz bottle from a 6er. Pours clear copper-amber, stiff white head. Aroma is hop citrus grass. Taste is clear crisp hops. Finish is clear. It’s a great "light" IPA that’s better than quite a few ’full’ IPAs. If people followed this session lead, session’s wouldn’t suck.

UPDATED: OCT 8, 2015 A brave blending of styles that blurs the lines between lager and IPA. It’s damn tasty, too. Double Agent has the malt character and alcohol content of a lager with the hoppy, fruity flavor of an IPA. This is a great idea with even better execution. This beer makes me wish that India Pale Lagers were more common. I’ve gotten to enjoy a couple of these and hope to have even more in the near future.

This was an interesting brew. The malt base and aroma are pretty ordinary for the style, an amber beer. The hops are citrusy but in balance. What makes this beer is the lager yeast, which adds a certain dryness not usual in IPA.
