Brewing innovation is about asking "what if?". What if we gave an IPA a new identity and used some of our favorite West Coast hops, with their grapefruit, piney, & tropical fruit character, in a lager? The result is this boldly hoppy & and flavorful brew with the crisp smoothness of a lager. Cheers!

MALT VARIETIES Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend and Munich malt
HOP VARIETIES Zeus, Simcoe, Citra, Ahtanum, Cascade, Centennial, and Nelson Sauvin hops

12oz bottle served in a Sam Adams perfect pint Best by July 2013 A - Pours a clear shiny copper/brass color with 1 fingers of off-white head. S - Big juicy citrus aroma fills the glass, some spicy onion, bready T - Matches the nose with juicy citrus hops, tangerine, orange, and ruby grapefruit. Dried strawberries, pineapple, in a lager? Grassy/pine hops mix in creating some stickiness. Caramel malts add a very balanced sweetness and round out the hops. Firm bitterness with a long dry finish. M - Medium body, solid carbonation smooth feel, dry and clean on the finish. This is a double agent! This lager is bursting with fruit flavor. This could easily pass as an ale. Tons of flavor packed into a sessionable 5.00 ABV. This is one of the most impressive beers Iíve had this year. Hats off to Jim Koch for this awesome beer. Serving type: bottle 02-18-2013

Pint at Tylerís Apex. Good aroma, sweet. Orange, toasted malt. Clean brownish orange color. Good head that faded quick. Spotty lace. Bittersweet flavor. lighter body, smooth thin mouthfeel, bitter finish. Good, easy drinking. Surprised to see it scored so highly scored though.

Somewhat murky deep copper-colored beer with a thick foamy white head. Nose is dominated by citrus hops with a little bit of pine resin. Taste explodes with grapefruit pith and peach, which then settles into a crisp grassy bitterness that lingers. The fruit flavors are really delicious and surprising. Distinctive beer that is worth trying.

An IPA Lager hybrid - SAMís new IPL to me is a smoothed out IPA that tastes similar to their Latitude 48 IPA but with more lager characteristics (crispness, fruit flavors). A nice change of pace, or something to pick up when you donít know what you want.

Bottle with a best before of October 2013. Pours with a crystal clear golden orange hue with a medium sized, tight, bone hued head with some very solid lace. Aromas are of pine, light tropical fruit, mango, grapefruit and citrus. Light resiny cohumulone, medium strong malt background that is mostly toasty and biscuity, a touch of apple as well. Flavors are bready, toasty, biscuity. Mild bitterness, some fruity notes. I wish there was just a bit more hop flavor and a bit more grassy dry hop character. Bitter balance is spot on though. Dry. Neutral balance. Livelier carbonation. Quite a decent beer overall, but could be a bit more hoppy.

Bottle. Nice clear amber color with a fruity off-white head. Nice aroma of citric and floral hops with piney notes and some caramelly malt. Flavor has sweetish caramelly malt, citric and piney hops and a moderately bitter finish. Medium-bodied. I had after cutting the lawn, but I could drink this anytime.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a golden light amber, white fluffy head with good lacing. Smell is sweet pine, citrus and hops with a bready earthy tone as well. Taste is really smooth, creamy texture, nice hop notes but not too aggressive. Carbonation is perfect for this style. Really like this one, Good summertime alternative to an IPA with its smooth drinkability.

Beer poors a deeper copper with a nice whit head with big bubbles. Color is deeper than most lagers. Aroma is interesting with floral, grapefruit hop aromas and light alcohol in background. Clean lager malt aroma. Flavor is very unique. Sam Adams has done a great job of melding a clean pilsner character with American IPA hops aroma, flavor and bitterness. Medium malt body with hints of carmel. Hops prevail in flavor with grapefruit, piney, citrus notes. Body is medium, with a finish that seems dry at first, but has more presence than first detected. Carbonation is lively and adds to this character. Finish leaves a nice citrus in the mouth. Overall very good beer, drinkable and very complex. Well done!
