Brewing innovation is about asking "what if?". What if we gave an IPA a new identity and used some of our favorite West Coast hops, with their grapefruit, piney, & tropical fruit character, in a lager? The result is this boldly hoppy & and flavorful brew with the crisp smoothness of a lager. Cheers!

MALT VARIETIES Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend and Munich malt
HOP VARIETIES Zeus, Simcoe, Citra, Ahtanum, Cascade, Centennial, and Nelson Sauvin hops

Aroma of delicious pine hops and slight apricot. Pours bronze lager with frothy sticky hoppy head. Taste is wonderfully hoppy with pine resin and peaches. Great hops linger but a nice oily lager feel while drinking. Lovely showing from Sam.

big hop aroma, slight oxidation. clear medium amber color. big white rocky head. slightly dull malt flavor, and some oxidation. discernible hop flavor and hop bitterness, medium body. i think that this bottle is a bit beyond its prime, though.

Smells of pine and a whole bunch of tropical fruit and grapefruit - spot-on descriptions by Sam in their labeling. Also an OJ character, like I find so often in Lagunitas beers. Big, fluffy, creamy head; nice rings of lacing. Orange-gold. Flavor follows suit - tropical fruits, Lagunitas orange juice, and hoppy bitterness in the finish. I would have guessed this as an American Strong Ale, not a pils. Wow! Then again, some takes on the impy pils can have a strong ale/IPA-like character, like Mother’s Uber, so I am not totally surprised, especially when Sam makes it clear that this has IPA-like qualities anyway. Delicious brew. A true lip-licker for sure. YUM!

Bottle:   Fiery straw, clear, moderate frothy white head, spotty lacing.   Pale hop nose, but also a noticeable grassiness.   Not too strong either.   Smooth grassiness up front, very little hop bite.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Feels a bit chewy.   I was expecting a bit more hop bite, but its not there.   A littel musty on the finish, but remains strong with its grassiness.   Very smooth, and very chewy.   This one needs a bit more hop bite to balance out the chewiness.   Otherwise not bad.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle dated March (2014?). The pour is a slightly cloudy medium amber with a soft, silky off-white head and moderate carbonation. Fascinating aroma of grains, malts, and tropical fruit. Low to medium hop note. The body is medium. The taste has an upfront buttery graininess which is followed quickly by a low to moderate hope feel. But it has its own character and is rather enjoyable.

Bottle. Enjoy before: 07/13. A clear copper pour with a thick and fluffy antique white head that leaves rings of lacing behind. The subdued aroma features some caramel, a bready maltiness, hints of rye, pine, citrus rinds, and some grapefruits. Thin to medium-bodied. Caramel and some sizable bready qualities start things off taste-wise. Cereal grains and some spiciness in the middle. Zesty rinds and some bitter grapefruits at the end. Kinda stale. Wet cardboard qualities abound. This was much more enjoyable when it was fresh.

17 aug 2013, yellow, clear, some bubbles. Nose is grapefruit rind hops, faint peaches, maybe some tea leaves. Thin body and moderately fizzy. Grapefruit rind, light cereal malt. Crisp and refreshing. Bitter lemon rind finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz bottle. Pours clear golden with a fluffy white head. Big hop aromas. Citrus and pine flavors. This is a fairly new style I am seeing out there and Sam Adams seems to have nailed it.

I give Sam Adams credit for this unique IPA + Lager fusion. It is certainly like a Sam Adams Boston Lager mixed with an IPA. Hop aroma and taste with a background that is crisp, smooth, and a tiny bit bitter. Not bad.
