Brewing innovation is about asking "what if?". What if we gave an IPA a new identity and used some of our favorite West Coast hops, with their grapefruit, piney, & tropical fruit character, in a lager? The result is this boldly hoppy & and flavorful brew with the crisp smoothness of a lager. Cheers!

MALT VARIETIES Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend and Munich malt
HOP VARIETIES Zeus, Simcoe, Citra, Ahtanum, Cascade, Centennial, and Nelson Sauvin hops

Pour from a 12 oz bottle. Medium amber brew with three fingers of white head that stays around for a while. Great hoppy aroma of citrus, pine, grapefruit. Taste is very light malt at the start and hop-dominated after that. Hops are well balanced and do not overwhelm the brew. This is a real winner.

Poured up a very light amber with small white head that did hang on about half way through drinking. Pine with some floral aromas made this seem interesting. Taste was a strong grapefruit flavor with hints at that pine aroma. Other than that it lacks anything else. Overall a typical lager with some great hop character.

A bright floral beginning with a surprising balanced bitterness in the body. A smooth dropoff for a finish. This could be my next session go-to beer.

Clear golden amber pour with fair offwhite head. Nose is citrus grapefruit and hop character. Very nice actually. Flavor is like a more floral/citrusy buttery version of boston lager. In fact, sub out the caramel for butter, lower the carbonation a little bit, take away a little of the bite, and this would probably pass for a boston lager. A little slick on the tongue. This is pretty damn good though. I think I might actually prefer this.

Light and bubbly. Strong hops but not overpowering. Crisp with notes of grass and citrus.

Copper-gold,short head, lacing. Clear, I really like the color of this one. Fairly hoppy aroma fruit, kinda spicey with general hoppiness. Taste is smooth, slickish, somewhat toasty/buiscuity with caramel,a little toffee,hops-citrus fruit-tropical like, dryish finish, good bitter, some noticable malt in finish also.Pretty spicey tasting overall. Good beer. Probably wouldnt really know it was a lager besides it being a bit smoother/slicker.

The aroma is very hoppy with pine and citrus hops it’s also malty with a yeasty bread quality. The appearance is deep gold with a medium head. The taste is like the aroma with a nice non bitter hoppy finish. The palate is smooth. Overall a very good beer.

UPDATED: APR 24, 2013 Bottle from Spring variety pack (note, it is not Spring). Poured into pint glass, clear golden-amber color with half-finger of creamy off-white head. Aroma is citrus fruits & floral hop forward, bready with some spice notes. Taste leads with the bitter hops, balanced with light malt backbone. Light body, medium carbonation, crisp, clean with lingering bitterness on tongue. I like this lager/IPA, refreshing and very tasty. I like.

Bottle from the Casual Pint. I have been waiting for someone to make an aggressively American-hopped lager and Sam Adams has done it very well. The aroma gets me stoked right away. Lots of citrus and herb stands out with nothing to stand in its way. The palate is crisp and lighter but the flavor skimps not on hops. Lots of grassy, citrusy hoppiness highlights this beer. It works so obviously well with the lightly yeasty body. I want more of this.
