Brewing innovation is about asking "what if?". What if we gave an IPA a new identity and used some of our favorite West Coast hops, with their grapefruit, piney, & tropical fruit character, in a lager? The result is this boldly hoppy & and flavorful brew with the crisp smoothness of a lager. Cheers!

MALT VARIETIES Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend and Munich malt
HOP VARIETIES Zeus, Simcoe, Citra, Ahtanum, Cascade, Centennial, and Nelson Sauvin hops

Clear golden body with a thin white head. Nice, inviting aroma of pine, grapefruit, and tropical fruit. Smooth, somewhat heavy mouthfeel. The flavor us unique. Starts relatively sweet, then the spicy hops kick in with grapefruit and a touch of pine evident. Finally it finishes sweet with a light tropical fruit punch. Very nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a clear orange yellow with a thick foamy off white head. Aroma of deep spicy citrusy pepper like hops. Taste is mildly sweet with an onslaught of citrusy hops. Mouthfeel is thick finish is clean. Interesting. A sixer maybe. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bountiful hops with a grapefruit forward character. A little bit smooth/watery. Iíd say they basically hit the mark that the advance material implied they were going for- something that combined the flavorful qualities of an IPA with the easy drinking refreshing qualities of a lager. I didnít feel like this was simply a hops-forward but otherwise standard lager like a Noble Pilsner. This legitimately went beyond that. Yet, itíd clearly be a bit too smooth or watery for an IPA. More hop heavy than a lot of sort of "BS IPAs" like the Shock Top thing that just throws in the "I" for its promotional value. Not actually an IPA, but if you want an actual IPA, why are you drinking an IPL? Actually would be near perfect for after walking the dog on a hot humid summer day. In the winter? Iíd prefer an actual IPA, but, again, I canít blame this for not being something it doesnít claim to be. Interesting experiment on the part of the Boston Beer Company. I wonder if the IPL will be an accepted new style by the beer community or this will just be considered a particularly hop-heavy malt-light Vienna lager or Pilsner.

Pours gold with white head and no lacing. Aroma of pine and citrus. Taste is big for a lager. More pine and straw with bitter after taste. Surprisingly good.

Bottle by June 2013. Nose is piney with lots of grapefruit and citrus rind, as woody as xylem, fresh with a little danger (alcohol, yes, but more like a disorienting whiff of CO2 out of a homebrew vessel). Very dull transparent orange lighter than but similar to copper, with a rocky off-white head. Taste is moderately dry with some perceived fruity sweetness, medium but very smooth bitterness free of astringency, juicy full body with a bready-crackery exit. The lager character isnít coming through very well, but the IPA side is really quite nice.

Bought and enjoyed in a bottle. Very strong aroma of hops and some fruit mixed in. Has a very refreshing mouthfeel, very crisp. Taste is a bit too bitter for me, and I feel that the hops overwhelm the other more subtle flavors. Overall, a nice beer to try, but definitely not something Iíd drink regularly.

Pours a crystal clear medium copper color with a huge bubbly and sticky bone white head that slowly recedes and sticks itself all over the glass on the way down. Smells of floral pine and resin in spades with hints of bread onion and garlic. Wow the aroma on this one shocked me! The flavor is light bready and caramel malt with a ton of hop flavor. Earth pine and resinous hop flavors tip the scale heavily to the hop side. Medium body with a medium to high level of carbonation and a slick resinous mouthfeel. This is nice beer, I was quite surprised by this one.
